EVP Vs RVP - Genre Differentiation?

EVP Vs RVP

Electronic Voice Phenomena, all modern paranormal investigators and paranormal enthusiasts know the term and the basics of the theories behind it.
I am not going to go into the long history of the phenomenon here, that has been covered extensively in my other writings on Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present, nor am I going to delve into the Psychology behind it all, Auditory Pareidolia or Apophenia as I am not trying to prove or disprove EVP here.
For those that read this that do not know the basics of EVP, here is a brief summary.
EVP are recordings done on audio or visual equipment (via the microphone) that are sounds which resemble human speech, or other recognisable sounds to the human ear.
EVP's are often found in the static or white noise of the recording, or the pauses in-between conversations of investigators. It is thought these voices or sounds may be from the afterlife, spirits or ghosts, or whatever you wish to call them.
There has been a class system attached to EVPs which is as follows:

  • Class A: The voices are clearly understood by all who listen and the words are somewhat loud and clear. Usually, 5 independent people who listen at separate times (so not to be influenced by other investigators opinions) have to agree 100% on what the spoken words are.
  • Class B: Voices cannot be clearly understood. Tones are also very low and hard to understand.
  • Class C: Voices are exceptionally faint and virtually completely incomprehensible which are most common and usually unacceptable.

At this current point in time, Franks box and “the Spirit Box” (popularised by TV show Ghost Adventures) have become very common tools in the kits of many paranormal investigators. No matter how hard people try and claim that these devices are picking up the voices of the dead, sceptics will always bring forth the fact they are broken radios, that sweep through radio signals and pick up broadcasts.
Not only do they pick up the radio, but also TV and CB radio signals and interference from other devices like EMF pumps.
What they are not doing is recording EVP's.
Why are they not recording EVPS You ask? - quite simply because of the reasons above.

I am going to take a massive leap here and coin a new phrase “RVP” Radio Voice Phenomenon, voices heard, or recorded from radio frequency scanning devices.
My guess is that this may create some controversy, but so be it, but I for one am sceptical about any device that can allow a radio signal to be its source of “intelligent conversation”, this is purely because it is easy to manipulate, can be readily interfered with by outside sources (like someone on a CB radio), our brains are attuned to listen for words which in itself is a source of Auditory Pareidolia or Apophenia and, in my opinion, the way we question the spirit box is much akin to the psychic who throws out the question “Is there anyone in here who has a relative who's named starts with M!?”
We are throwing out questions expecting a preconceived answer, and more often than not we will hear that answer within in the noise of the radio sweep when there is actually nothing there.

So, the point of this exercise was not to discredit the Ghost Box, because there is always the chance that this device is genuinely picking up the voices of the dead as theorised, the point of this exercise was to create terminology to distinguish between two very different types of phenomenon that are all too often put under the one title of “EVP”.
EVP and RVP are two very different types of data collection used by paranormal investigators globally and should be categorised as such. Both have different traits, different advantages and very distinctly different disadvantages.

I for one will now refer to any recording that is captured from a radio device, Franks Box, Spirit Box as an "RVP"

I expect there will be feedback on this, please refrain from outright attacks because they will be deleted, but please do offer constructive feedback on the terminology (not the device itself, or the reason it does/does not work) – I'm not looking to change the world, just to clarify genres of paranormal data recording into more intelligent categories and sub-categories...

Thanks

General Standards

Eidolon Paranormal

General Standards

Eidolon Paranormal has developed a general set of standards for
conducting field investigations that supplement and complement our
more rigid protocols.
These standards are based on experience and common sense.
Our standards and protocols establish a baseline to judge photos, and
other types of evidence obtained, by eliminating errors in data recording
and evidence tainting, but also cover how one conducts themselves
upon an investigation.

  • Respect private property, ask permission, and do not trespass.
  • Respect clients and other peoples beliefs whilst on-site
  • Never vandalise or take anything from a location.
  • Show reverence and respect in cemeteries, historic sites, etc.
  • No running, or disrespect in cemeteries or historical sites.
  • Always log moon and weather conditions at pre-set times during an investigation
  • Do not take photographs during adverse weather conditions, such as rain, mist, fog, windy, or dusty conditions.
  • Remove or wear the camera strap so it does not hang loose.
  • Take photos of dust particles, pollen or moisture droplets to see how your camera records these kinds of orbs.
  • An orb is not special or unique. An orb is only a description of shape. Most common orbs are airborne dust particles. Do not show orbs as evidence of a paranormal event without other conclusive evidence to back it up
  • Do not take photos from moving vehicles on dusty roads.
  • Do not take photos while walking on dusty roads.
  • Remove all dust, spots, and fingerprints from camera lens.
  • Keep mobile phones turned off or in your vehicle and only check it when your away from the investigation during a break.
  • Avoid shooting into the Sun for resulting lens flare.
  • Avoid shooting with flash at reflective or shiny surfaces.
  • Keep fingers away from the lens of the camera.
  • Keep long hair away from the lens of the camera.
  • Keep fingernails away from the lens
  • Please do not wear perfume or heavy deodorants on investigations
  • Avoid shooting when foreign objects are floating near camera.
  • Compare anomalous prints with negatives for confirmation.
  • Flash is only good for 9-12 feet from camera so focus on that range or use an I.R. illuminator
  • Always use fresh audio tapes for tape recordings.
  • If digital, record in one or two minute tracks.
  • EVPs recorded whilst no human is present, on two separate recorders will have more credence
  • Do not rub the side of the recorder while recording nor walk while recording. Stand still to record.
  • We do not consider Ouija boards, dowsing rods, pendants or séances valid investigation tools
  • No smoking, drugs or drinking during an investigation.
  • At all times remain professional in your approach. This means no swearing during an investigation in a client’s house.
  • Ask for an area before the investigation starts where smoking of cigarettes can be done, so as not too offend client nor taint evidence.
  • Always remove your rubbish from a site.
  • Always respect a clients property, don’t move furniture or objects without permission, do not plug in equipment without permission.
  • When interviewing prospective clients, always be sure to remain polite and concise in your questions, do not lead them to an answer, and always keep an open mind.
  • Video or audio record all interviews wherever possible
  • To avoid false readings make certain equipment is in proper working order and that everyone involved knows how to properly use all equipment
  • Carry proper ID
  • Have permission documentation with you (or in car) at all times whilst on investigations

Eidolon Paranormal

EVP Protocol

  • EVP work will be conducted with a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 investigators (fewer is best).
  • At the beginning of each EVP session, each investigator will state his or her name for audio to provide a sample of their voice for comparison later, and to capture their presence for the record.
  • There will be no less than 2 audio recorders running in a location where capturing EVP is attempted
  • Investigator one will ask pre-scripted questions
  • There will be a pause of no less than 30 seconds and no more than 60 seconds between questions
  • After the questions are asked there will be a pause of 5 minutes where all investigators present will remain still and silent
  • After the period of silence, there will be a five minute conversation between two investigators present. All others will remain still and silent.
  • After the conversation, investigator 2 will ask the same scripted questions as investigator one, with a pause of at least 30 seconds but no more than 60 seconds between questions.
  • All questions will be asked in normal conversational tone.
If, during EVP work an audible response is to occur (rapping, knocking, etc.) it is expected that EVP protocol will be abandoned to an extent.
The person asking the questions will change their course of questioning to elicit more active responses.
All investigators MUST stay within eyeshot of the video camera during this time to validate that no investigator is causing the phenomena.
The Photographer will photograph around the areas where the activity is occurring, as well as the investigators to document them. If activity does not include solicited response type activity - the questioning investigator should state for audio - "We will begin gathering readings at this time" Temperature, EMF, and other readings will be captured and documented. Photographer will continue taking photographs. Once the activity has stopped, investigators will continue with EVP work until complete.
During EVP Work it is very important that all investigators remain as still as possible and as quiet as possible. If an external noise is heard; or an investigator shifts, sighs, makes a body noise; the interviewer will verbally remark for audio. If the interviewer fails to remark and another investigator hears an external noise or the noise of another investigator, that investigator will state his/her name and remark on the noise heard.

PI:Past & Present: Erin Mallette

Erin Mallette

Hailing from Hastings, Minnesota USA, today I speak with Erin Mallette, Director of Hastings Paranormal Team.

Allen: "Erin, how did you become interested in the paranormal?"
Erin: “My farthest back memory of anything out of the ordinary was playing with "fairies" in my great grandmother's garden...since then I've been a fan of odd and gardening....”

Allen: Erin, have you had anything you would deem “paranormal”, or “supernatural” occur in your life?
Erin: “ Too many things to actually list...as a teen and young adult I let the 'fever' die back and shut things off...but when I took a job at an ice cream parlour here in town I heard a strange noise in the back room.  The kids who worked there as well as myself had
always had strange things going on during our shifts, but I went to check on it and found a man standing by our power boxes back there behind our trash can with his arms outstretched to me.  He didn't say anything and turned and walked right through the wall there...I proceeded to run towards the spot and feel the wall for any openings or whatever...  I had to go to our city hall and do some research and found that during the '50s the place was a diner owned by a couple.  The wife was a terrible flirt and cheat, the husband hanged himself in what was the kitchen area...the back room of the ice cream shop...I believe that's who I saw there.  Since then my curiosity is unquenchable!!"

Allen: “How has being a paranormal investigator changed your life?

Erin “Becoming an investigator has been a mind opening experience...actually, I am a Christian and it has opened my faith and also tended to back up my learning experiences.  I'm not the sort to claim all paranormal is demonic either...just the sort to question the spiritual world as we're actually supposed to.  I don't know if ghosts exist....there are strange things out there though that some folks claim are ghosts.  I don't know what it is, but my mind races trying to figure it all out sometimes....which I may never do, but in the meantime, I'm busy, right...and that's a good thing!”

Erin loves to investigate private homes, It gives her a chance to interact and help someone in need, and possibly debunk something that may be causing fear to the members of the home, this, in turn, offers understanding through educating the client, and peace within their home.

Erin has also been privileged enough to investigate the Old South Pittsburg Hospital in Tennessee, considered one of the most
haunted places in Tennessee – Erin had this to say of the hospital
“ It was amazing due to the amount of activity going on there on a daily basis.  We were 'locked in' for two days and nights and obtained numerous EVPS and actually caught some interesting things on the night vision cameras that were set up.“

Another place of great interest to Erin and the Hastings Paranormal team is Pachyderm Recording Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, USA. Erin and team investigated the studio a few years ago, but a change of ownership has blocked re-entry of the premises for now
Erin ”We investigated here a few years ago and have been wanting to go back since then, but it was up for sale and then sold and haven't worked things out with the new owner although he seems interested.  A recording studio whose property abuts what used to be the sanitarium for the area...not to mention the recording acts who have been there (Nirvana, Live...etc...) and the lifestyles of those who have stayed there have created some fascinating energy there.  We obtained a couple of the most interesting still shots I've ever taken there and numerous evps.  A very active location!”

Another great location, (sure to make some of our Australian readers jealous) is The Villisca Ax Murder House, in Villisca, Iowa, USA a very well known location after being exposed on international TV via the Travel Channels “Ghost Adventures” team. Erin's thoughts on the house? That it has been “over investigated”

I asked Erin if she had any interesting stories related to her investigations she could share with us all...
Erin: “ We were investigating at a cafe here in Hastings and another investigator and I were in the basement....we saw a thin outline of a man pass right between us followed by a large black shadow type of man(?)...then the very air in the room seemed to turn a deep red color.  We followed the shadow to various rooms in the basement where after a few minutes in each room we seemed to be led...the air took on the same deep red hue.  It did not show on our cameras or any other device that could have documented it however so even though it happened you'd have to take our word for it.”

Allen: “Has anything you cannot explain yourself, or that would deem “paranormal”, ever happened on an investigation that you have been involved with?

Erin “ I wish I could share it all with you!!  On our recent excursion to Old South Pittsburg Hospital, however, we were just entering the building and coming down the hallway by the nurse's station when I saw a woman walk across the hall at the end...I thought there was maybe another team there or something but it was just the owners and who I saw was neither of them.  We did catch on a night vision camera something following us across the same hallway and a door opening completely by itself...possibly more as well as we haven't been through all of our audio/videos from this one yet.”

Allen: ”What is your best piece of evidence you have captured, and can you tell me about why it was a good capture?
Erin: “ Something following us down a hallway as aforementioned....it is extremely rare to catch actual video evidence of anything at all.  Also, I have a favourite evp....it seems to predominantly be a woman's voice, but it also seems like a multitude that we obtained from a restaurant here in town that says,  "We're dead...what do you want with us here?"  This is good because they seem to realize their situation and are as curious about us as we are about them.”
Like most modern paranormal investigators, Erin is very much a fan of EVP work, and list her voice recorder as one of her favourite pieces of para-tech to use whilst investigating.

Hastings Paranormal Team runs Information Presentations at their local library, if you are in the local area and wish to attend, please follow the links to the teams' website at the bottom of the interview.
Erin has also appeared as a guest on “ The Secret Lives of Women: Women in the Paranormal” a reality television program that features on the WE (Women's Entertainment) Channel.
Erin has also been a guest on various local radio programs and on “Fringe Radio” as a guest of Annie Wilder

Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present: Konstantīns Raudive

Konstantīns Raudive

The man who made EVP research famous, Konstantin Raudive, was already somewhat famous himself at the time of his paranormal research studies, studying philosophy and psychology under Carl Jung and writing numerous philosophical books that were always well received by his peers.

Raudive was born in Latvia but found himself in exile after the Soviets took back Latvia during World War 2. He moved to Sweden and taught at The University of Uppsala.

In 1964 he read Friedrich Jurgenson's book “Voices from Space” and arranged to meet the paranormal investigator.
Raudive had always had an interest in the paranormal and studied parapsychology and supernatural literature whenever he could.

The meeting with Jurgenson led Raudive into a subject which would become his passion, and for which he would become famous worldwide for, Electronic Voice Phenomena.

For three months he experimented tirelessly with what he had learned and got nothing, then one day, he finally recorded a voice from an unknown source. His elation at finally making contact re-invigorated him and led him to experiment with different ways to record and conduct EVP sessions, thus becoming an EVP pioneer in the process.
As Raudive experimented, he developed new ways of recording spirit voices and tried many different things, including crystal radio sets, which he used in his early work extensively.

Soon he developed his own custom devices to help with clearer recordings, one of which, now known as the “Raudive Diode” uses Germanium in a circuit which acts as a microphone receiver.
Raudive conducted most of his experiments in controlled scientific conditions, using strict protocols. He was monitored by other scientists whilst doing his experiments, which were generally 18 minute EVP sessions.
His equipment had devices on them that would block radio and television signals, essentially a Faraday cage. Like most sessions, no voices were heard during the recording, but on playback, to the amazement of all involved, voices could be heard clearly, including Raudives own deceased sister, who said her name “Tekle” and Raudives nickname, “Kosti”

In the last ten years of his life Raudive collected around 100,00 audiotapes of “spirit” voices, it is claimed over 400 people became involved with his research and each and every one of them heard the voices recorded.
In 1968 Raudive published a book titled “ Unhörbares wird hörbar"- or “What Is Inaudible becomes Audible”, which has also been published in English as “Breakthrough”, He went on to write two more books before his death in 1974.
Raudive was a pioneer of early EVP work and set some of the standards for how the work should be conducted today.

Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present: Friedrich Jurgenson

The Godfather of EVP

Friedrich Jurgenson

Born in 1903 in Odesa, a city in Ukraine, Friedrich Jurgenson was the son of a Swedish mother and Danish father, who had moved to the country from Estonia.
The family pushed young Friedrich into the arts. He trained as a painter and concerto pianist. During World One the family fled from Estonia.
In 1925 the family moved back to Estonia, Jurgenson went as well, and soon left for Berlin to continue studying, only to find his tutor was a Jew, who decided to flee the Nazi's to Palestine, Friedrich went as well and stayed there for 6 years, where he also started a successful Opera career.
Jurgenson ventured home to visit his parents in Estonia, the bitterly cold weather damaged his vocal cords and ended his singing career. He decided to then focus entirely on his painting, of which he had become very accomplished.

During World War 2, he moved to Sweden and learnt his tenth language. He also married and became a citizen. He spent his time painting portraits of wealthy Swedes.
Whilst visiting Italy, Jurgenson was asked by the Vatican to catalogue their archaeological works, buried beneath the Holy City. Jurgenson did as he was asked, and impressed Pope Pius XII so much with his work that the Pope asked him to paint a portrait of him, of which he did, then completed three more, for a total of four portraits of the Pope.

In 1957, Jurgenson purchased a tape recorder to record himself singing. He noticed in places, during playback, that the sound faded in and out. He also began to take notice of his sixth sense abilities, abstract visions, and telepathic messages.
He had this to say about what he was hearing.

"I sat by the table, clearly awake and relaxed. I sensed that soon something was going to happen. Following an inner pleasurable calmness, long sentences in English appeared in my consciousness. I did not perceive these sentences acoustically but they formed themselves as long phonetic sentences and after a closer study I couldn't conceive the words as correct English but in a disfigured almost alphabetical way - completely deformed. I did not hear a voice, a sound nor a whisper. It was all soundless."

In 1959, FJurgenson made a discovery that would change the paranormal community. Whilst visiting his country house with his wife Monica, Jurgenson decided to take his tape recorder and get some of the local bird sounds caught on tape, whilst listening back he discovered that he could hear a man's voice.
Jurgenson said this of his recording:

" I heard a noise, vibrating like a storm, where you could only remotely hear the chirping of the birds. My first thought was that maybe some of the tubes had been damaged. In spite of this, I switched on the machine again and let the tape roll. Again I heard this peculiar noise and the distant chirping. Then I heard a trumpet solo, a kind of a signal for attention. Stunned, I continued to listen when suddenly a man's voice began to speak in Norwegian. Even though the voice was quite low I could clearly hear and understand the words. The man spoke about 'nightly bird voices' and I perceived a row of piping, splashing and rattling sounds. Suddenly the choir of birds and the vibrating noise stopped. In the next moment, the chirping of a chaffinch was heard and you could hear the tits singing at a distance - the machine worked perfectly!"

Friedrich Jurgenson went on to research and document thousands of voices he recorded, all, he claimed, “spirits from the other side”, or “voices of the dead”
One single event cemented his belief that he was indeed recording the voices of people that had passed over, and that was the sound of his dead Mothers voice.

"I was outside with a tape recorder, recording bird songs. When I listen through the tape, a voice was heard to say "Friedel, can you hear me. It's mammy ...." It was my dead mother's voice. 'Friedel' was her special nickname for me."

Jurgenson abandoned his painting and other interest, and began to concentrate solely on his EVP work, even publishing a book in 1964 titled "The Voices From Space”

Jurgenson now found himself in an interesting place, paranormal societies from across the world, The University of Freiburg and the Para-psychological Association of the USA all wanted to talk to him, also, Claude Thorlin and Konstantin Raudive came to visit and learn what they could of Jurgenson’s techniques and findings.

In 1960, one of the spirit voices told him to use radio as a medium to listen and interact with spirits, this he did, and continued to do until his death. He plugged the radio directly into his recording device and set the frequency to around 1145-1500 kHz (1485.0 kHz is now called the Jürgenson Frequency), Friedrich found he could communicate in real-time with the spirits and hold
conversations.

Jurgenson went to on author more books, and also to paint another Pope, and also make a documentary about him, which earned him the Order of Commendatore Gregorio Magno from the hand of Pope Paul VI.

By the 1980's
Jurgenson had become very well known in Parapsychology and paranormal investigation circles for his Electronic Voice Phenomena recordings, studies, lectures and books. By 1985 he was predicting that television would soon be able to carry “spirit” pictures with voices also, he called his new vision “Audioscopic Work”, unfortunately, he died before he achieved this dream.

Friedrich Jurgenson died in 1987,  the Godfather of electronic voice phenomena did not merely pass away quietly though. Since his death he has returned through EVP sessions, constantly telling how “life” is in the afterlife, his image has even appeared on television sets in different parts of the world at the same time, in similar conditions as to what he had predicted.

Paranormal Investigators: Past and Present: Kathy Messenger

Kathy 'Messenger' Flanagan

Welcome to another instalment of the Eidolon Paranormal blog “Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present”, this week we remain in my home state and visit self-proclaimed psychic: Kathy "The Messenger" of Renmark Unexplained Paranormal Investigators, in South Australia's Riverland. I have decided with this blog to let my interviewee do most of the talking, as her answers to my questions are very descriptive, detailed and profound, and don't need much in the way of narration from me...

Introducing, Kathy Messenger of R.U.P.I.

Where does your interest in the paranormal stem from Kathy?
“ I became interested in the paranormal when I was very young, I was born with the ability to see ghosts/spirits and have been doing so regularly since the age of 12. This has been a part of my life for well over 30 years and the passion for research and investigating grows every day.”

“My first paranormal experience was when I was 4 years old. Where I was born in 1962 it was a small country town where every one (sic) knew everyone, so it was quite common for a 4 yr old to go around the corner and visit with a friend. This particular day I was on my way to visit when I saw a boy on the corner playing with 2 toy trucks, he smiled and waved to me, saying “hello want to play”. I stopped and played for a little while he told me his name was Jeremy and asked if I wanted to go to his house to play, I said I had to ask mum. When I went home and asked mum she said no and I can not go out to play any more that day. When I was 15 my mum told me Jeremy had been killed on that corner 20 years before I was born.”

Kathy has accumulated 30 plus of years of investigations, stories and anecdotes since becoming an investigator, I asked Kathy how she became an investigator?
“I decided to become an investigator in 1979 with my trusty old cassette player, because I thought if I could hear them, then maybe just maybe the recording will. I wanted people to hear what I hear, share my excitement of knowing there is life after death.”
"For me becoming a paranormal investigator has not changed my life, because I have been stepping into all my life really but it has certainly educated me and inspired me to keep going”

How did R.U.P.I. Come about, and had you investigated with other teams before?
“ I created a team named R.U.P.I. in March 2012, we are the first paranormal team in the Riverland and very proud of that.
I have worked with a team previously, and found it very educational. I worked with this time as a part time medium, they have their own amazing medium, I would go along when invited.
I am the Medium of this team, also Lead member, Investigator, secretary, etc.”

Does R.U.P.I. Have a favourite place to investigate?
“R.U.P.I. has a favourite location called Nappers Bridge, Lake Bonney, this area is full of activity of not only adult spirits but children, it also has a very interesting history.”

Where else have you investigated in this great country of ours?
“I did an investigation in an old asylum in Sydney and that was intriguing, the atmosphere in there was deep and thick, our senses at times were confusing, and although not much was caught on video or photos, the personal experiences were at times fast and furious.”

"Gladstone Goal was another place we investigated, it was formidable on first approach. As a medium I came across some interesting spirits, to say the least, we have a nice little collection of evps from there, with question and answer response. These 2 places stick in my mind because of the violent history and how strange the atmosphere, the air was so different to the other. Where I felt confusion in the Asylum I felt great anger in the Goal."

What of your data and evidence, have you had any great finds in your time investigating?
“We have some great evidence but my favourite is the old captain from Renmark Hotel. I took a photo after hearing my name being called, I was down stairs cleaning, heard my name, climbed the stairs, saw him and took photo, low and behold there he was. For me this validated me hearing my name called from a certain area, due to being able to capture him with camera.”

What would you say is your favourite piece of investigative equipment?
“R.U.P.I always uses digital voice recorders. This would have to be our favourite piece of equipment, due to the fact it helps validate my questions to a spirit with a response from them.”

Kathy and the team have some exciting upcoming projects for 2013, some that may put them in the spotlight, I asked Kathy if herself and her team has had any media exposure as of yet?
“R.U.P.I. has been very lucky lately, our team made the front page of our local paper “Murray Pioneer”, I had 2 interviews, one with local radio 5rm and the other with Magic FM, which really has assisted a great spark in interest.”
