Where's Smithy?

An early Australian aviator, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (9/2/1887 – 8/11/1935), known by his nickname “Smithy” made the first non-stop flight crossing of the Australian mainland, the first Trans-pacific flight from the U.S.A to Australia, the first flights between and Australia and New Zealand and set a record for a flight from Australia to England at 10 and a half days.
He also notably fought in World War One as a pilot over France, taking down four enemy planes in his first month and being part of many bombing raids that destroyed enemy bases

Kingsford-Smith flew the iconic Australian aeroplane, “The Southern Cross”, a Fokker F.VIIb/3m trimotor monoplane, the plane is now stored in a memorial near the Brisbane airport in Queensland.

Sir Kingsford-Smith and Co-pilot, Tommy Pethybridge, were attempting to fly from England to Australia in 1935 when they mysteriously disappeared. The pair were flying the plane “Lady Southern Cross” from India to Singapore, attempting to break the speed record, when they disappeared over the Andaman Sea on November 8th 1935.

Their bodies were never recovered. 

There has been much speculation as to what happened, and where they lay, but few answers...

The Lost Indus Valley Civilisation

India’s oldest civilisation, the ancient peoples of the Indus Valley, is considered one of the greatest civilisations in history. This was an advanced culture with a highly sophisticated sewage and drainage system and an incredibly hygienic way of life.

The ruins of one of their cities were discovered in 1832, and from that find, it was discovered that the civilisation spread from India to modern Pakistan and Afghanistan.

There is no record found in any historical documents of these people having armies, slaves or being involved in any war, so what happened to them, and why did their civilisation die out so quickly?

History's Mysteruies : Voynich Manuscript

Voynich Manuscript 

 

A medieval manuscript written in an unknown language and an unknown script has baffled researchers since its discovery by Wilfred Voynich who purchased it in 1912 and made the finding of the manuscript public.
Code-breakers, decryptors and professional cryptographers have had no success in deciphering this 15th century 240-page manuscript.
It features six parts, which seem to indicate Pharmaceutical, Astronomical, Herbal, Biological , Cosmological and Recipe chapters.
One of the more interesting parts is the Herbology section which seems to have pictures that don’t match any plants species that we know.

History's Mysteries: The Shroud of Turin

The Shroud of Turin

Sometimes referred to as the burial shroud of Jesus, the Shroud of Turin is said to hold the image of a man who is said to have died from crucifixion.
Carbon dating tests suggest it comes from the middle-ages, but many believers say the shroud is in-corrupt, and therefore carbon dating that measures decay cannot accurately measure the age of the Shroud.
The Shroud is currently at the Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Turin, Italy.
As of yet, no-one has been able to explain how the image was created on the shroud.

It was once known as the “Image of Edessa” and reported since the 4th century, there is also another cloth named the “Sudarium” (John 20:7) which is from Biblical times and said to have covered the head of Jesus in the tomb.

In a study conducted by Avinoam Danin, a researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, it was concluded that the two cloths covered the same head at two distinct, but close moments of time.
Interestingly, the Sudarium cloth also has blood stains that are blood-type AB

Taos Hum

What is the mysterious low-pitched hum that is being heard throughout the world?
Heard in the U.K., U.S.A., New Zealand And Northern Europe, the hum can be heard in quiet locations, it is described as sounding like a distant diesel engine idling.
It has so far been undetectable by microphones or VLF antennae.
A recent study suggested that older people, particularly over 50-year-olds, are more prone to sensing and hearing the hum than the rest of the population

History's Mysteries: The Iron Pillar of Delhi

The Iron Pillar of Delhi

A Pillar that never rusts is standing in the centre of Quwwatul Mosque in Delhi, India. Thought to be made around the 4th Century A.D. The pillar is carved with inscriptions indicating it was erected in honour of the Hindu God, Vishnu, and for the memory of the Gupta King Chandragupta 11 (375-413.
It has stood for 1600 years without rusting.

The Pillar stands at 7.3 metres tall, with one metre buried in the ground, its diameter at the bottom is 48 centimetres and tapers to 29 centimetres at the top, it is approximately 6.5 ton in weight.

How the rust-resistant metal was forged so long ago remains a mystery, as does how the pillar came to be where it stands today, as it was most certainly not where it was made or where it originally stood.

On the Greek island of Crete once lived a great civilisation known as the Minoans. This civilisation is probably best to remember for its legends of Theseus and the Minotaur.
The civilisation flourished more than 5000 years ago, but after a volcanic eruption on the neighbouring Thera Island, the civilisation declined and was wiped out 50 years later.
It is not known what ended this thriving civilisation, but theories include volcanic ash, devastated croplands, and invasion of Greek armies

History's Mysteries: Carnac Stones

Carnac Stones

3,000 megalithic stones arranged in perfect lines over a distance of 12 kilometres on the coast of Brittany in the North-West of France make the awe-inspiring sight of the Carnac Stones.

Myths abound around these stones, the most well know myth being that each stone represents a Roman Legion turned to stone by the Wizard Merlin, another myth involves pagan soldiers in pursuit of Pope Cornelius turning the pagans into stone.
The stones are dated to around 4500BC, it is unknown who built them or why.

Antikythera Mechanism

Discovered in a Greek shipwreck in 1901 and recovered by a diver, Elias Stadiatos, the Antikythera Mechanism, is a mysterious little device that confused researchers and historians for over 100 years.

The mechanism is the oldest known scientific device, speculated to have been built in Greece in around 100 BC, and lost for over 2000 years.
The mechanisms use was only recently discovered, it is an astronomical clock that determines where the stars and other celestial bodies are positioned with the most extraordinary accuracy.

History's Mysteries: The Bloop

The Bloop

In 1997 a mysterious noise was recorded under the Pacific Ocean, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were recording whale sounds when they picked up a very strong, very low-frequency sound, they nicknamed “The Bloop”. It was said to be a similar sound, when sped up by 16 times, to that of someone throwing a rock in a still pond of water “bloop”.
The sound was recorded several times until it mysteriously stopped.

There is no known animal in the oceans of the world that is big enough to make a sound so deep and of the frequency recorded.
Bombs, submarines, man-made disturbances, volcanoes and earthquakes were ruled out as being the source of the sound.
This left a lot of room for speculation by scientist, paranormal enthusiasts and cryptozoologists, with Cthulhu, The Cloverfield Monster and Poseidon all being put forward as explanations, another put forward is that this “bloop” could be some large sea monster we have not yet discovered.

In 2012 a different theory was presented, that the sound was that of an “ice-quake”, an event that happens in Antarctica often, where glacial ridges melt and slide into the ocean, creating a long slow underwater booming sound. Some people believe this is not the actual answer, and that the “bloop” is indeed something else, something alive...

History's Mysteries: The Baigong Pipes

The Baigong Pipes

Mt Baigong in Qinghai Province, China was the home to an unusual discovery in 2002 when U.S. Scientists, on the trail of dinosaur fossils, investigated three caves at the bottom of the mountain and stumbled across a set of mysterious pipes.
The pipes, known to locals for thousands of years are about 40cm in diameter, and span the length of the caves, out into a nearby lake, and incredibly up to the top of the mountain.
Locals say the pipes are extraterrestrial in origin and were part of an ancient alien base, other explanations include fossilised tree roots, whatever the case is, it is an interesting and mysterious find.

Curses: The Curse of Atuk

The Curse of Atuk

 

Atuk is a script for a movie yet to be made. Legend has it that this script has been passed amongst some of Hollywoods leading funny men who have all passed away suddenly after reading the script.
Atuk, which means “Grandfather” in Inuit is intended to be a film about an Inuit hunter trying to adapt to life in the big city, a classic “fish out of water” type tale. 

Actors to have read the script and allegedly top have died because of its curse include, John Belushi, John Candy, Chris Farley and Sam Kinison, others whose deaths have also been attributed to the curse include Michael O'Donoghue and Phil Hartman who both would have had minor roles in the film.

The movie was most recently referenced by Will Ferrell in “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” when Adam McKay repeatedly pitches a screenplay called “Eskimo in New York” to Ron Burgundy

Is the legend truthful or is it just another group of coincidences that have been loosely put together as a conspiracy and curses...
