History's Mysteries: The Shroud of Turin

The Shroud of Turin

Sometimes referred to as the burial shroud of Jesus, the Shroud of Turin is said to hold the image of a man who is said to have died from crucifixion.
Carbon dating tests suggest it comes from the middle-ages, but many believers say the shroud is in-corrupt, and therefore carbon dating that measures decay cannot accurately measure the age of the Shroud.
The Shroud is currently at the Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Turin, Italy.
As of yet, no-one has been able to explain how the image was created on the shroud.

It was once known as the “Image of Edessa” and reported since the 4th century, there is also another cloth named the “Sudarium” (John 20:7) which is from Biblical times and said to have covered the head of Jesus in the tomb.

In a study conducted by Avinoam Danin, a researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, it was concluded that the two cloths covered the same head at two distinct, but close moments of time.
Interestingly, the Sudarium cloth also has blood stains that are blood-type AB

As always with our history's Mysteries (and all Eidolon writings), links are provided below for you to research and discover topics for yourself – don't just take our word for gospel, there is plenty to learn about each and every topic we share, and please, feel free to add comments below each and every topic we share, your input is always welcome...

St Mary Magdalene - “the sinner from whom Jesus had cast out seven demons”

St Mary Magdalene - “the sinner from whom Jesus had cast out seven demons”

Born into a wealthy family, in fact, she was royalty, with her parents and brother Lazarus and Sister Martha, they owned, and lived in a castle, just two miles from the Sea Genezareth. They also owned the village of Bethany, near Jerusalem.

Like all wealthy people of the time, they indulged in carnal pleasures, gluttony and other earthly sins.
Mary was known to enjoy the bodily pleasures her wealth and beauty brought her, and through her constant quest for pleasure, soon found her good name gone, to be replaced in the streets as merely “The Sinner”.

Mary soon became a lady of the streets, and in time found herself in the house of Simon the Leper as Jesus himself visited. Mary, not wanting to sit amongst the just, Mary walked up to Jesus, washed his feet with her tears, dried his feet with her hair and anointed them.

Jesus gave much to Mary Magdalene, he expelled seven evil spirits from her. She became a loyal friend and supporter and helped Jesus upon his journey. He defended her against the Pharisee who called her impure, against her own sister who accused her of being idle, and against Judas, her accused Mary of being a spendthrift.
Jesus also raised her brother Lazarus from the grave, four days after his death, and cured her sister Martha of hemorrhages that had plagued her for seven years

Mary followed Jesus from Magdala in Galilee to Bethany in Judea, and later to Cavalry, where she watched on as our Lord was forced to bear his cross, and then was crucified. She sat at the foot of his cross as he suffered for our sins. She was it his tomb when he was buried and was the last to leave.
Mary was also the first person to which Jesus appeared upon his resurrection on Easter Sunday – and was heard to utter “Christ Has Risen!” – Which still echoes through time today for all Christians

Mary Magdalene went from the great sinner to Saint, and the “Apostles of the Apostles”, and after the resurrection of Jesus, she continued to preach his word.

When the persecutions started around 42 AD, the people of the Church of Jerusalem scattered amongst the Roman Empire around the Mediterranean Sea, into Greece, Italy Spain and Gaul (France).
Mary, Lazarus, Mary Salome and Mary Jacoby, disciples Maximin and Sidonius were all forced onto a ship with no sails, oars or supplies and set to sea. The ship floated across the Mediterranean Sea and eventually found its way a port called Rha (France) that later became known as Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (Holy Marys of the Sea).

The group continued to deliver the gospel in their new found home, with Lazarus baptizing new Christians at every chance.
Soon the group split up with Mary Salome, Mary Jacoby and Marcella remaining in Rha while the others made their way overland to Massilia (Marseille). Martha soon left for Tarascon, and Maximin for Aix.
Lazarus would remain in Massilia, eventually becoming the cities first Bishop, whilst Mary and Sidonius travelled to La Sainte Baume.
Mary and Sidonius discovered a large natural cave in La Saint Baume, which they would make their home, and where Mary Magdalene would see out her final days in Penance.
Mary would spend the next 30 years meditating in solitude, other than the seven angels who would visit her daily. The Angles would take Mary to the top of the mountain she was living under, to hear the sounds of music from heaven, and to take in the view that allowed her to see out to the Mediterranean Sea. It is said in the 30 years she spent in the cave, Mary did not drink water, nor eat.
After 30 years of longing to be reunited with Jesus, the day finally came when the Lord enlightened her that her death was near. The Lord guided her to the village of Villalta, and along the way, she was met by Maximin, who had been divinely inspired to meet her and lead her Church. At the very spot they met, there was a pillar – which still stands today.
Mary Magdalene received Holy Communion from Maximin in the new Church, and fell lifeless, before him at the altar. The year was 72 AD.
Mary was buried with great pomp and dignity in an alabaster tomb near the Church, upon her death it was noted the Church, and her body gave pf a sweet perfume – this is often associated with the holiest of people and incorruptible bodies.

A century and more passed, and in 1279, an excavation of a crypt under St Maximin in France, Charles II, The Count of Province, discovered a sarcophagus made of marble, which upon opening smelled distinctly perfumed which the Count believed may have been something similar to the perfume Mary Magdalene had anointed the feet of Jesus with.

The skeletal remains were missing the lower leg bones and the jaw, and were found with a note on papyrus which read:

The year of the birth of the Lord 710, the sixth day of December, at night and very secretly, under the reign of the very pious Eudes, king of the Franks, during the time of the ravages of the treacherous nation of the Saracens, the body of the dear and venerable St. Mary Magdalene was, for fear of the said treacherous nation, moved from her alabaster tomb to the marble tomb, after having removed the body of Sidonius, because it was more hidden.

There was also a wood tablet covered in wax, inscribed with the words “Hic requiescat corpus beatae Mariae Magdalenae.” It was estimated to be made between the 1st and 4th centuries.

To honour his great find, Charles II built the Basilica; “Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume”, in place of the old church. The relics of Saint Mary, including her jawbone, which had been venerated in Rome for the previous Millennia, and returned by Pope Boniface VIII, were put on display in a unique gold reliquary
Every year, on Sunday closest to the 22nd of July, Saint Mary Magdalene’s remains, affixed with a gold mask upon the reliquary, are carried around the town to celebrate her life and her sacrifices to Jesus.
Another Holy Relic of Saint Mary Magdalene is one of her teeth, displayed in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art

Religious Protection: Part Two - Christianity

Religious Protection(Christianity)

This page is a continuation from the previous "religious protection " page found here - "Religious Protection".
I recently asked in the forums of "Christian Cryptozoology and Paranormal Study Group", on Facebook, if there were more Christian prayers or scriptures I could share with you, constant reader, that may aid you in your need for spiritual protection against dark entities brought forth whilst investigating.
Pastor Robin Swope, "The Paranormal Pastor" was forthcoming with some suggested reading, so I decided to add a new page to the website with the good Pastors suggestions.
Soon, I will be asking for religious protection prayers, or scriptures, from other religions to add to our collection here on Eidolon Paranormal

Until then, stay safe!
 - Allen

1 John 4:4

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

You are from God, children, and you have conquered them because he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world
4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them.
The saints had overcome these false prophets, but they were of God,
because greater is he that is in you, and the Spirit in them was mightier
than he that is in the world, than the evil spirit, that of the prince of the world,
which was in the false prophets.

Ephesians 1:19 - 23
 (New Living Translation)
19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
 Ephesians 1:19- 23
(Common English Bible Translation)
19 and what is the overwhelming greatness of God’s power that is working among us believers. This power is conferred by the energy of God’s powerful strength. 20 God’s power was at work in Christ when God raised him from the dead and sat him at God’s right side in the heavens, 21 far above every ruler and authority and power and angelic power, any power that might be named not only now but in the future. 22 God put everything under Christ’s feet and made him head of everything in the church, 23 which is his body. His body, the church, is the fullness of Christ, who fills everything in every way.

Romans 8:31-39

Romans 8:31-39

31 What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
32He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? 33Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.
34Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.*
35Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36As it is written,
‘For your sake, we are being killed all day long;
we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’
37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
39nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Stigmata: Conclusion

The Stigmata what have learned?

Over the length of the Stigmata series on the Eidolon Paranormal Blog, we have described a great number of similar occurrences and detailed differing types of stigmata, as well as brought you a broad spectrum of people, from saints to everyday people, right across the globe, from this we have learnt the following aspects about Stigmata.

Stigmata is mainly felt by Catholics (with very rare cases outside the Faith)
Stigmata can affect Holy people, but also everyday people.
The first, and only recognised Stigmata case by the Roman Catholic Church is that of St. Francis of Assisi
The wounds can appear on the hands or the wrists of those with Stigmata.
Visions usually accompany the Stigmata, mostly they are of the Virgin Mary, Jesus or a Saint, but in at least one case they have been of the Devil.
Stigmata appears to be psychological to the medical community, but it is still unknown as to why the and how the physical attributes happen
When one case of Stigmata “breaks out”, it is usually followed in quick succession by others reporting Stigmata, with no valid connections to one and another, other than being Catholic, afterwards a long period will occur when no cases are reported.
Hemography – Blood used from Stigmata wounds forms letters and symbols on clothing and bandages to form Symbolic words or meanings to the Catholic Faith.
Other supernatural phenomena usually coincide with stigmata such as bilocation, prophecy, revelations, soul connections, connections with spirit and Jesus and levitation.
As of yet, no-one in Australia has reported Stigmata
almost all cases of stigmata report the blood from the wounds having a “rose” scent – the same scent is apparent with those who have incorruptible bodies ( http://eidolonparanormal.blogspot.com.au/2012/10/proof-of-god-incorruptible-body.html)
Stigmata was once enough of a miracle for someone to become a Saint after death, the Catholic Church no recognises it alone as such an honour to beatify someone.

Stigmata is still an often overlooked supernatural phenomenon, most likely as most paranormal investigators today laugh off anything religious as being “out there”, which if you think about it is rather ridiculous with so many chasing demons and other biblical creatures, and the whole paranormal community being a little “out there”
There is much in the Bible describing supernatural and paranormal phenomena that are overlooked whilst people chase ghosts, or get stuck in Church Dogma, but there seem to be no paranormal investigation teams interested in researching the phenomena like Stigmata that is still happening in modern times.
It would be great to see more teams look further afield than ghosts, UFO's and Bigfoot, and search other phenomena.
The Stigmata will continue to be a mystery until a sufferer comes forward and allows real medical teams and scientists to study their bodies, wounds and minds and find try to make sense of what is happening, the phenomena could be psychosomatic, self mutilation or indeed of God, but until any real documented, unbiased research is concluded we will never know the truth.

Stigmata: George H

Stigmata of George H.

In 1985 in Scotland, around the same time as Jane Hunt, a man known simply as George H. received the stigmata, George wasn’t a particularity religious fellow, but at the time he had been studying Saint Francis of Assisi, the first of all stigmata sufferers.
George received his marks, and at the same time, instead of visions of Jesus or Mary, his vision was of the Devil, Satan mocking him, tempting him with favours and promise and with other more unsavoury acts.
George became increasingly ill, and ended up in hospital fed through a feeding tube, it is said the devil would whisper in his ear on a daily basis...

Unfortunately, that’s where the trail ends with George H. from Scotland, with nothing further written about him available online on this stage, did he live? I cannot answer that, but it is very interesting that his vision was not of The Lord or The Virgin Mary, but of the devil. It is a stark contrast to the norm ( if there is one) of stigmata!

Proof of God? - The Incorruptible Body

Proof of God? - The Incorruptible Body

Saint Virginia Centurione Bracelli,
 who died in 1651.
An Incorruptible body is a belief that divine intervention preserves some deceased human bodies from decomposition.
Our flesh and blood bodies decay after death, much quicker if not embalmed, but some Christians have a belief that the bodies of very Holy people are spared this indignity and that their corpses are preserved indefinitely. There is long-standing evidence of this belief with the untainted remains of many saints in different countries of the world.

This effect has baffled many scientists, with no clear and rational explanation given as to what causes the effect.

It should be noted that this isn't due to mummification, artificial preservation or other "modern science" human effects upon the body, but is instead thought to be a divine supernatural effect that only occurs with the bodies of Saints and other Holy People.
It appears that most of those affected have died very recently, or indeed appear to be sleeping, even though some of them have been dead for hundreds of years!

There is a belief that these bodies will be resurrected in the End Times spoken in the Bible, to what purpose is unclear.

Many in-corrupt bodies produce a distinctive scent known as the "Odour of Sanctity", which resembles the fragrance of rose blossoms. Some of these bodies also have a miraculous power to heal sick people who touch the preserved flesh.
The smell is also noted to come from the wounds of those suffering the stigmata. This condition and the scent were reported by those that witnessed the Stigmata of Padre Pio.

Is it Divine Intervention, or something else?
