The Stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi was an Italian Catholic Friar and preacher, but before he became a man devoted to God, he was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant who was often seen cavorting in the streets with friends as a youth.
Francis was born whilst his Father was away on business, his mother was having a difficult labour and could not push the child out, an old beggar woman knocked on the door of the house and told her she should go to the stable. Once in the stable, miraculously, everything righted itself and the baby was born.

The unnamed baby was soon to baptised “John” in the local church and was given the name Francis, upon his Fathers return. “Francis” meaning “ The Frenchman” in Italian, was given as that was his Mothers birth country.
His upbringing was that of a moderately wealthy Italian family, and Francis himself was known for being flamboyant, often wearing clothing all the colours of the rainbow, with a long red feather protruding from his hat.
One day, an unusual thing happened, a beggar came to town, and upon seeing Francis, removed his dishevelled coat and placed it on the ground in front of Francis.
Francis told the beggar, “I have no money give!”, but the poor beggar did not care for money, he replied, “I do not want any! I do this to honour you, for, you will soon do great things that will be talked about until the end of the world!”

 The beggar's words have indeed proven to be true, with the recent election of Pope Francis, taken his name from St Francis of Assisi.
Francis, a youth of high spirits and energy, was soon to face war, like all youths in Italy in that era, he was sent to fight. Francis was captured and spent a year imprisoned. Upon his return to Assisi, it was noticed the energy and pluck of his youth were long gone, instead of his endless partying, he was now seen to stray into the fields to pray.
He gave away his armour, he gave his horse and gave away many of his other possessions.

Whilst praying in the Chapel of San Damiano, a neglected old ruin at the time, Francis heard the Lord Jesus speak to him, Jesus told him to “Rebuild his Church”. Francis took the instruction literally and sought out the old priest in charge of the ruins, and gave him a large bag of gold to get the restoration work underway.
Francis disappeared for a month or more, no-one knew where he went, but when he returned he was dressed in rags like a beggar. His Father had him taken away fearing he had gone mad, but when his Father left on business, Francis Mother gave him money and set him free.

 His Father returned, and was angry, he took his son to court to retrieve his money but lost. Next, he took his son to the local Bishop. The bishop questioned Francis extensively, and Francis reply was that he wishes “to serve God”.
The Bishop admonished Francis for stealing his Fathers money, to which Francis reply, was to walk behind the curtain of the Bishops throne, strip naked, and return. He laid the clothing in front of his Father, as well as a small bag of gold and said unto him “Until now I have called Pietro di Bernardone father. I am returning his money and the clothes he has given to me. From now on, I shall not say ‘Father Pietro di Bernardone,’ but ‘Our Father who is in heaven!’”
With that Francis came under the protection of the Church and one of Gods servants.




It wasn't long until Francis lifestyle earned him followers, men and women who were inspired by the wealthy youth, who would give it all up to follow Christ and serve him unconditionally.
One of Francis followers, a young woman named Clare was so inspired she started the Catholic order of Poor Sisters
Frances himself also founded a number of orders, which the Pope at the time, Pope Innocent III authorised in 1210, he also went on to found the Order of Poor Clares, a religious order for women, as well as the Order of Brothers and Sisters of Penance (The Third Order)
It wasn’t until near the end of his life that Francis stigmata appeared. He had a vision of Jesus on a burning cross in the night sky.
Streams of light came from the vision and touched upon Francis body, overcome with the deepest of love for the Lord, Francis fell to the ground, the wounds of Christ displayed upon his body.
It is said Francis found great joy in carrying the wounds of Christ but they had a terrible effect on his body, weakening his health greatly. His stigmata lasted from 1224 until his death in 1226.
Late in his life, Francis received the Stigmata,
as told in this account from the Catholic Encyclopedia:


Early in August 1224, Francis retired with three companions to "that rugged rock 'twixt Tiber and Arno", as Dante called La Verna, there to keep a forty days fast in preparation for Michaelmas. During this retreat the sufferings of Christ became more than ever the burden of his meditations; into few souls, perhaps, had the full meaning of the Passion so deeply entered. It was on or about the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (14 September) while praying on the mountainside, that he beheld the marvellous vision of the seraph, as a sequel of which there appeared on his body the visible marks of the five wounds of the Crucified which, says an early writer, had long since been impressed upon his heart.

Francis died singing to death, his body was carried through Assisi so the people could see the wealthy young youth who would become known as the poor man of Assisi.




Saint Francis of Assisi is the first recorded person to have been gifted the Stigmata.
On July 16th 1228 he was pronounced a Saint by Pope Gregory IX.
He is known as the patron Saint of Animals and the environment and is a patron Saint of Italy (along with Saint Catherine of Siena)
Saint Francis of Assisi is also recognised as the creator of the nativity scene.

An Introduction to the Supernatural Phenomena of Stigmata.

Stigmata

Greek: Plural, Stigma singular. Στίγμα - meaning to brand, mark or tattoo, used for identification of livestock or slaves. Individuals bearing stigmata are known as a “stigmatic” or a “Stigmatist”.


The Stigmata is an often overlooked phenomena in the paranormal world, that focuses so heavily on ghosts and UFO's, we at Eidolon Paranormal like to do things a little differently than other teams, and research a vast array of different topics, and keep away from recycling the same old stories we so often see on paranormal forums, in what seems to be an endless cycle of trying to “top” another teams work.
Really though, how many times do paranormal fans out there want to read about Amityville (for example), with a slight variation of events, it'd be like watching the same episode of Ghost Adventures in a highlight real again and again with a slight variation to Zak's hair in each episode – you wouldn't want to watch it, we wouldn't want to present it.


So, as we have done before with our look into “Hex house” (http://eidolonparanormal.blogspot.com.au/2012_11_01_archive.html) and Pennsylvania Dutch Hex Signs, we are going to delve into The Stigmata and some short biographies on people who were blessed, or suffered from it, (as the case may be). As per usual with all our topics we present, we will provide links and direction for you to research the subject yourself (if you choose) – there is nothing better than making discoveries on your own, and we would like to encourage you to do so, rather than accepting what we put out as gospel.


So What is the Stigmata?


The Stigmata is used a term used to describe marks upon someone’s body, sores, wounds or pains that correspond with the crucifixion wounds suffered by Jesus Christ, the wounds appear on the feet and hands, a wound on the side, and sometimes many small wounds, or severe pain around ones head usually in conjunction with many marks across ones side and back. (an often overlooked aspect of the Stigmata that is associated with the “scourging” of Jesus with cat-o-nine tail type whips)

The main wounds are where the nails were driven into Jesus' feet and hands. Where the crown of thorns placed upon his head, and where Roman soldier, Longinus drove a spear into Jesus' side.
Many blessed Saints have become famous for the stigmata appearing upon their bodies, St. Francis of Assisi and Saint Padre Pio, being amongst them, but everyday, ordinary people have also borne the wounds of Christ and, as you are going to see with the coming Stigmata posts, it is not only men who the wounds appear on, women have also had stigmata.


Is it real?

This is truly a fascinating subject that needs exploring further. There are so many unanswered questions. Why do the wounds not get infected?
Why do some wounds smell like roses?
Is it a psychological physical manifestation and not Holy and of God?
Why are some Stigmata wounds in the wrist and not the hand?

A Haunting at Fremantle Arts Centre

   Work first started on the site where the Fremantle Arts Centre now stands back in 1863, with convict labour used to clear the six acres of land. In 1964, the foundation stone was laid for what was to become the Convict Establishment Fremantle Lunatic Asylum and Invalid Depot.
  The Asylum operated much like a prison and was bound by the same State and National laws as local gaols. It was used to house many types of people afflicted with social disorders and other problems and housed alcoholics, prostitutes, the elderly, the infirm, and the insane.

  In 1900 the asylum housed 219 patients, often with 20 people in a single room. It was at this time that a scandal broke out when Mrs Clifford was violently killed by another patient. All eyes were on the Asylum, and its practices. Staff and patients came under government and political scrutiny.
The scandal saw the Government force the Asylum to take on a medical superintendent and a trained mental health nurse.

From 1909, the Asylum's role in the community changed, now housing women only. It went from Asylum status to what is colloquially known as a “poor house” and was known as The Women’s Home.
  One year later, after the onslaught of an epidemic in Western Australia, the Women’s Home also became the training centre for maternity nurses, which in 1916 would move to the King Edward Hospital for Women.

  From 1909 until 1941 the Asylum was home to poor, divorced, and elderly women. The home faced many problems in this era, including young women escaping and men digging holes through the limestone walls to see their ladies. There were young women admitted suffering severe venereal diseases, these young ladies were under lock and key on the top floor of the building.

 In 1941 protests about the conditions of the patients, and the condition of the buildings saw the government close the Women’s Home.

 In 1942, during World War II, American soldiers were given the old asylum and its grounds for lodging. Other soldiers were soon to find lodgings there, with 22 new buildings erected to cater for 139 enlisted men and 21 officers.
From 1946 the Asylum took on a new role, that of school, with the Fremantle Technical School opening. At this time it also saw students from Princess May Girls School and Fremantle Boys School attend lessons on its grounds in prefabricated classrooms, but by 1958, the old building had started to fall into a state of disrepair.
 Sir Frederick Samson, Mayor of Fremantle, stepped in when threats were made to demolish the old Asylum in 1958. He envisaged a museum and arts centre being housed in the buildings. In 1970, some 12 years later, the museum part of the building was completed, and in 1973, the Arts Centre was completed and opened and is still operating today.

So is it Haunted?

Reports of doors opening and closing by themselves are very common within the building, but these events alone do not amount to a ghostly presence, however, people also report “cold spots”, strange lights in the building and, most peculiarly, extra people noticed standing in photographs who weren't present when the photo was first taken, also, people report the feeling of physical phenomena such as being hugged or kissed by unseen people.
Another common report in the Arts Centre is that of the apparition of an old lady who walks the corridors searching for her abducted child. It is thought she is an ex-asylum patient who jumped from an upstairs window, killing herself from grief...

Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present: Kellie Ann Wirtz

Hailing from Fond du lac Wisconsin, U.S.A. Today we meet Kellie Ann, co-founder of Wisconsin Team Paranormal Investigation and Research Society.
Kellie Ann first became interested in the paranormal in her early teens, She enjoys researching and reading about all things paranormal, and solving mysteries. Her passion for helping people is what has driven her to take her interest further and start to dig deeper into mysteries, and thus, become a paranormal investigator.

Before Co-founding PIRS, Kelly honed her skills with another team, Kettle Moraine Paranormal Investigation.

Kellie Ann has investigated some impressive locations, listing the Old City Hall building in West Bend Wisconsin, Washington County Historical Society Old Jailhouse and Courthouse and Villisca Ax Murder house as three that have impressed her. Kellie states that the history of the locations fascinates her, but the help and support of these locations owner/caretakers is what has impressed her most. Kellie Ann also tells me that Villisca Ax Murder house has offered up the best evidence so far.
Despite being impressed with these locations, Kellie Ann still lists peoples private homes as her favourite locations to investigate, as helping people on a personal level is her main priority.

Kellie Ann has had some interesting events happen during her investigations, most notable for her was when her team was trying to contact a 4-year-old boy on the other side. Kellie Ann was communicating with the boy, who she says appeared to be frightened by them, calming him down and making him aware they were not there to harm him.
As Kellie Ann left the room, she felt something wrap around her legs, almost knocking her over, but nothing was there, was the boy's spirit offering her a hug for her kind words and efforts to help him?
Becoming a paranormal investigator is often very rewarding when you are doing it for the right reasons, and it can be life changing for some, Kellie Ann has told me that it changed her life for the better, it has opened her mind and heart, and the people she has met have touched her soul. Other investigators have taught her a lot, and that she has seen great acts of compassion and kindness.
There is much good in the paranormal community, and it is good to see connections being made, people learning, inspiring and making positive energy flow.



Everyone loves to hear a good investigation story, so I asked Kellie Ann if she has any stories I can share with you, constant reader.
Kellie Ann:

“While in Villisca, my best friend Char and I performed an experiment. Char had been there the week before our group. She left a message in the attic for me by telling whoever will be there what her favourite colour was. I didn't know the answer to it. So when my group and another group was there I asked the question. What is Char's favourite colour? When we met up in September for a convention we shared our EVP's. Mine came back with "Colour blue" but then it also said "Purple"  Hers said "Please tell Kellie my favourite colour is Blue" but, at the end of it you hear her son say "But Mum I thought your favourite colour was purple?"  So we got both answers on record. We are going back next may together this time and will conduct more experiments. I am truly looking forward to it.”

Kellie Ann and PIRS have appeared on a few blog talk radio shows, including “Night Haunts” & “Sunday Night Dead” but as of yet have not been approached for any television or newspaper articles

Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present: Karen Sherry

Karen was born in Glasgow Scotland, about eight years ago she moved here, to sunny Adelaide, and lived here for about two years before to moving to Brisbane, Queensland, where she now resides and is an investigator for the Australian Paranormal Investigators team.

Karen cannot remember a specific point in time where her interest in the paranormal sprung from, but living in the United Kingdom, with all the historic buildings, castles and homes, many of which are hundreds of years old, it wasn't hard for her to develop an interest in the history, nor the paranormal, as ghost stories are rife throughout the United Kingdom
 Although Karen doesn't have a specific time period she became interested in the paranormal she does have a memory of something unusual, when she was about 6 years old, Karen can remember sitting, playing with a deck of cards. She distinctly remembers deciding to give herself a “reading”, making a rule for every number and colour pattern on the cards, she set about doing her reading. It wasn't until much later in life that Karen discovered her Gran and her sister were card readers, but they had never told her, nor done any readings in her presence, so there was no way she could have known about their interest.

Australian Paranormal Investigators

 At the beginning of Karen's journey to become a paranormal investigator, she would take ghost tours and stay overnight in haunted hotels, hoping to experience phenomena, but wasn't enough, she wanted to know and learn more. It wasn't until her move to Australia that she decided to make the change from enthusiast to an investigator, her only regret is she didn't take the opportunity to follow the path in the United Kingdom, with all those historic buildings and locations
  Making the change from enthusiast to investigator has changed Karen's life, Karen had this to say about the change.


“Its made it busier at times for sure, like most of us tying it in with a full time career.   It’s a strange one really, in one hand its opened my eyes to more possibilities for sure, but in the other hand its also made me more sceptical as well.  Its human nature, the more you do, the more you experience, the more frequent things happen….the more you can find patterns or alternative reasoning… then resulting in becoming hungry for a ‘ paranormal experience’  that a logical reason cant be applied.  I'm definitely more passionate nowadays that I ever was and more into history, researching than at the start when it was all about just ‘experience’s’ now its ‘ trying to match those to truthful events I guess.”



Karen has been very lucky with investigations due to the fact she has been able to travel abroad to soe of the worlds better known haunted locations. Here are a few of places Karen has visited and her descriptions of events, in her own words:
Karen:
On the Queen Mary, Long Beach, CA
“I have been lucky enough to do 4-weekend investigations in the past few years and never disappointed.  RMS Queen Mary was built in my home town of Glasgow, a luxury cruise liner in the 30/40s, then a war ship transporting POWs, then a cruise liner again after that… the amount of reports on this ship is amazing and more than any other place I know.. good odds of having an experience or capturing EVP etc, it's my definite No.1 because paranormal aside the history and feeling of that ship is a real step back in time and spending the weekend on board you actually feel like your back there… amazing experience hunting or not!

The Queen Mary

I have developed a really good relationship with some researchers in the US that has allowed me access to places where the normal public don’t go, so that has probably heightened my experience on the Queen Mary I have to say.”

I asked Karen to name three locations that impressed her, of course, with her impressive list of places she has visited, three became a hard choice!



Karen's top three:
 "The Edinburgh Vaults, Scotland:  Firstly because its just an amazing historic location.  Investigated 3 times now and never disappointed with personal experiences, EVP and temperature/ EMF fluctuations hard to explain.  Genuine feeling of energy at times down there and just an impressive place to have had the chance to investigate.
Airth Castle, Scotland: again, amazing historic location.  Large wooden doors closing unaided, evp and unexplainable readings.  Impressive location whether paranormal or not.. the experience is worth it

Thirdly id say my home ( or at least my home when we first moved in and started renovating) certainly not as an impressive location as the others but some things experienced there was the primary reason and catapult for me getting involved in API.  This was not just personal experiences either as other visitors to the house would wonder why certain things were happening.  I do have to say after a year it all calmed down very nicely and I now kinda miss my old visitors.  Its now just back to a normal home!

Id tag on the ' Hotel Del Coronado' to my 4th, the location alone is just amazing, with the mountainous reports 3 of us spent a weekend there tracing steps of previous reports as well as spending 2 over nights in the notorious rooms, spending time in this historic hotel was a real step back in time and we are so glad we had the opportunity to investigate a location like this , paranormal aside because of its grandeur and notoriety it was one of my favourites.

I would like to state that we have had some interesting locations within Australia of course, but with our top hot spots overseas there's just nothing as yet that has been able to knock any of them off my list...YET"

I asked Karen if she could share with us a story of any unusual experiences she had had whilst investigating, or in general.

Karen: “A rather nice ‘ possible’ experience was at Bungunyah Manor, QLD where one of the  tales is of the lady who used to own the building.  Shes been frequently seen and one report stands out where she knocked on a room door of 3 ladies in middle of a blackout and asking the ladies in the room if they would like a cup of tea,  at that point they thought it was the owner, to only then see her turn and walk through a wall.  I found that story rather funny and cute.  One of the times we investigated in ‘the room in question’  at 2am,  my kettle started boiling.  I checked the switch and its an old flick switch i.e not easy to put on or off by accident.. so only a possible ‘ paranormal’ but a cute one on the chance that the nice little lady wanted to make me a cuppa also.”

Karen has told me that her favourite piece of equipment is her trusty voice recorder, she uses it without other ITC devices, and gets good clean EVPS, I also asked Karen what her best or favourite piece of paranormal related evidence is:

Karen “For definite,  EVP from the Queen Mary, its most definitely residual but its so prominent and beats anything else we have.  I love it because how do you logically explain 40 minutes at 1am of  creaking and groaning noises like an old ship, old clock ‘ ticking’  when there was an old art deco clock in the room that hasn’t worked for years, keys jangling when it’s a card swipe and most predominantly footsteps on wooden floor when everything’s carpeted.  It really sounds like a little snippet of time gone by and only 40 minutes out of 4 hrs recording an a complete fluke as all I did was leave a camcorder running in my stateroom whilst I was investigating elsewhere on the ship.”

Karen and Australian Paranormal Investigators have so far not been approached for much in the way of media-related enquiries, and in fact, have shied away from it, but they did partake in one interview for “Coast to Country NSW” magazine, who published a spread on the team investigating a historical homestead in New South Wales.

Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present: James Randi

International Sceptic James Randi

This week we are visiting a famous sceptic and debunker of the paranormal, that's right, a sceptic, Mr James Randi.
Randi, a native of Toronto Canada is an internationally renown sceptic, but also an investigator of the paranormal. Randi has investigated the occult, supernatural beliefs and the paranormal, what he refers to collectively as “woo-woo”.
James Randi started out on his paranormal exploration path as a magician named “The Amazing Randi”, from 1946 he was a professional conjurer and escapologist, he has appeared on many television shows over the years including the Tonight Show, Penn and Teller and in Australia on an infamous episode of The Don Lane Show, where Don was on stage with James Randi. Randi criticised Doris Stokes, a show regular, and the tempers boiled over, Don Lane was outraged and famously said to Randi, "we're going for a commercial break and you can piss off. We'll be back with Diana Trask" see the clip here:

During the 60's Randi hosted his own radio program, of which he often spoke about UFO's, amongst his guests was famous UFO researched James Mosley. Mosely invited Randi to be a guest speaker at a UFO conference in New York where he famously said during a speech “ Let's not fool ourselves. There are some garden variety liars involved in all this. But in among all the trash and nonsense perpetrated in the name of Ufology, I think there is a small grain of truth."
In the '70s, Randi went on tour with hard rock act, Alice Cooper. He performed on stage as a dentist and executioner. He also designed a number of Alice's stage props that were used throughout Alice's macabre stage shows.

Perhaps James Randi is best known for the offer of one million U.S. dollars for any person who can demonstrate evidence of paranormal, supernatural or occult powers under event conditions agreed to by both parties. To this day, the offer still stands with no-one being able to prove their psychic abilities under test conditions.
James Randi, now in his 80's is still working hard, having recently come to Australia for the annual convention of Australian Sceptics in Carlton Victoria. He is also working on a documentary about a stunt he pulled in Australia with the 60 minutes TV show crew back in the 1980s!

Update: James Randi passed away at the age of 92 in October 2020.

We're are flying across the globe tonight to revisit Germany and meet Tom Pedall of Ghosthunter-NRWup located in the North Rhine-Westphalia city of Wuppertal.

Thomas was around 12 years old when he visited with his Great-Aunt in a very old house in Echternach (Luxembourg) where she lived. His Great-Aunt would regale him with stories of the ghosts in her house, Thomas himself, even heard the ghost walking up the stairs on occasion when no-one was there. His Great-Aunt also told him, that a few years ago, she was having work done in her coal-basement, when the workmen found a skeleton, possibly of a World War 2 Soldier.
Thomas got his interest in the paranormal from his the strange things happening in his Aunts house during his visits there, it led him to start reading paranormal related books, about ghosts and hauntings in his local library, this, in turn, led Tom into his journey to start investigating for himself later in life.
 His Great-Aunts house is not the only place where Thomas has experienced unusual events, in 1994 in the weeks before his Father died, Thomas started to hear footsteps in his parents flat and seeing shadows when no-one was present.
Much later in 2004-2005, Thomas and his partner Claudia were laying in bed one night, when about 1am they heard noises from the attic. It sounded like heavy furniture moving across the floor from where they lay, they knew no-one else was in the house or in the attic. On a different night Claudia witnessed a large “fog-ball” in the air, Thomas has also witnessed shadows in their home office and had strange reactions with his cats, one even jumped between him and the shadow he could see and began to hiss at the shadow until it disappeared

 With all this activity throughout his life, it was only natural that Thomas would seek an explanation to the cause. In 2010 Claudia and Thomas met two people through an internet forum and founded a Ghosthunter team, but decided to leave that team and found a new one in 2012, and thus Ghosthunter-NRWup was born.

Thomas focus, like most of us in the field, is to find natural explanations for anomalous phenomena, wherever He can, but he is also interested in helping people and giving them support to know that phenomena are often real and that his clients aren't crazy!

 Another thing Thomas enjoys is the connections he has made with teams locally and internationally, allowing him to discuss different techniques and philosophies, which is often eye-opening.



The four members of Ghosthunter-NRWup are Claudia, Tom, Daniela and Markus ( a Medical Doctor).
 In the past Tom and Claudia, together with their old team, have investigated some fascinating places including Castle Frankenstein, Castle Vondern, Castle Satzvey, Castle Altena and Chateau Burg, just to name a few!
