Old Geelong Gaol Paranormal Investigation with Allen Tiller

Want to investigate the Old Geelong Gaol with Allen Tiller?

As many of you know, I don't run investigation nights very often, but this year, I am running two investigation evenings at the Old Geelong Gaol on the 28th and 29th of August.

This is a massive goal, considered very haunted, and is the place that Gaurav Tiwari famously snapped a full spectrum photograph of what is believed to be a guard that haunts the gaol.

Each night is limited to 15 guests. from 8:30pm until 2am. With a short talk and tour before we start investigating, and plenty of time for you to explore. If you have ghost hunting equipment, you are more than welcome to bring it along...

Paranormal Resume

Paranormal Resume

So, you’ve started a new ghost-hunting team, and you’re finding it hard to access locations?

Have you considered having a “resume” of past investigations?

We all have resumes to gain potential employment, but you can use the same idea to build a resume to send to potential locations you wish to investigate.

After completing a successful investigation, ask nicely if the owners wouldn’t mind writing a short reference about your conduct. Add that reference and a short brief about your investigation into a file in the style of a resume.

Place your police checks, insurance policy, your team's code of conduct and a short brief about your team in the same document.

You now have an investigation resume you can forward with your letter of intent to investigate!

Kristen Luman: Ghost Mine

Kristen Lumen

One woman in a haunted gold mine, with a bunch of gruff looking blokes, explosives and ghosts, who would've thought that would be a Television show concept that production companies would go for?
Whoever pitched the idea, and made it happen, Bravo to you, because, as it turned out, the show was immensely popular among the paranormal show viewing audiences, and introduced a new female lead, that would inspire many young women to look towards paranormal investigation as a hobby, a way of life, or a profession.
Kristen Lumen, the flame-haired investigator of Ghost Mine, earned herself a BA in Psychology from Portland State University, from which she focused her studies on Paranormal Psychology and Human Development.
She has also worked as a model and an actress before landing the role on Ghost Mine

In an interview with Russell Dickson of “News Blaze” (of which you can read the entire interview via the link at the bottom of the page), Kristen speaks of her interest in the paranormal as a child and young girl.

Kristen Lumen: “I was just really fascinated as a child. I was the little girl at the slumber parties trying to convince the other girls to play with Ouija boards and hold séances. I constantly read books about the paranormal to the point of worrying my Mom. I first started doing investigations in college while taking a parapsychology course”
Kristen studied at the Hypnosis Motivation Institute where she became a certified hypnotherapist and also became a member of the American Hypnosis Association, from these beginnings she went on to study Pain Management and Energy Healing. Kristen is also a strong believer in the power of thought and belief, that through belief, one can achieve what they desire (Known as the Eriksonian school of thought)

Eidolon Investigation - Nudgee Cemetery - QLD 2003/4/5

Nudgee Catholic Cemetery

Location: Queensland Australia

Location type: Catholic Cemetery

Location status: Business Hours
Website: http://www.nudgeecemetery.com.au/

History

A Roman Catholic Cemetery, Nudgee Cemetery is located in the inner northern suburbs of Brisbane, in Queensland Australia.
Although It is a Catholic Cemetery, anyone of any denomination can be buried at Nudgee cemetery.

The Cemetery opened in 1867 and was Brisbane's first Catholic Cemetery, it still remains Brisbane's largest privately owned cemetery.
St Vincent's Orphanage was established near the current location by the Sisters of Mercy, under the sponsorship of Bishop James O'Quinn, with a new orphanage and a budding Catholic community it was decided a new cemetery was in need for the burial of parishioners, Priests and orphans and the local community.
In 1867, Bernard McHugh was the first person interred in the cemetery.
Nudgee Cemetery was very popular amongst the Irish Catholic community, so much so, an Irish Stonemason moved into the district and set up a monumental masons works nearby in the 1890's, "Timothy Wrafter & sons PTY LTD" Many of the older tombstones made by Mr Wrafter still remain.
Brisbane persons of note buried at Nudgee cemetery include: TC Beirne, philanthropist and department store owner. The former managing director of Castlemaine Perkins, Mr George Wilkie Gray. Premier of Queensland and founder of the democratic Labor Party, Vince Gair

Eidolon Paranormal in Queensland
Nudgee cemetery is one of the locations Allen credits as a testing ground when he first started testing equipment and techniques.
This cemetery was located very close to the suburb he was living in at the time and was easily accessible, and not frequented by many people, day or night , which made testing new ideas and equipment much easier.
This is reportably a very haunted cemetery, including full bodied apparitions, vortex's and strange lights (you can see some photos at this website: http://liannamaye.webs.com/ghostphotospageone.htm
Allen never found anything out of the ordinary here on his multiple day and night excursions

Eidolon & Haunted Auckland - International Joint Investigation - Russell Hotel - NSW - (2013)

The Russell Hotel
The Rocks - New South Wales
Website: http://therussell.com.au/
The Russell is a bed & Breakfast located in "The Rocks" district of Sydney, NSW. It is close to the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Circular Quay and other historic and iconic places in Sydney.
Located at 143a George Street, The Rocks
Ph: +61 2 9241 3543

Karen & Allen from Eidolon Paranormal were invited to Sydney to investigate the Russell Hotel by New Zealand based "Haunted Auckland" founder, Mark Wallbank, who was traveling to Australia to see his favorite band.
The three paranormal investigators met for the first time at the hotel, and proceeded to have a walk through this historic Sydney location. They then went for a walk to find some dinner, and on the way stopped through a few more historic locations, where they were allowed to walk around and take photos at their leisure. The Orient Hotel even gave a tour of the its haunted areas and a brief run down of paranormal activity that happens in the hotel.
Dinner was found at Circular Quay, and the three investigators then took in some of Sydney's iconic sites at night, before walking around the CBD looking at old and new buildings.
They then returned to the Russell Hotel to begin their investigation. Starting in the sitting room, Night vision and Full spectrum camera's (Thanks to Apparition Technologies) were turned on and some EVP sessions began, however noise from the street, and guests returning to their rooms through the old creaky hotel corridors and hallways contaminated a great deal of what was captured.

It was then exploration began, Room 8, the notoriously haunted room had a guest so remained off limits, but a small, quiet EVP session was conducted in the dead end hallway outside. Every hallway was then walked through and recorded.
After this EVP sessions were conducted in room 4 and room 5 before we wrapped up our night and headed of to bed.
Besides a few odd noises, that could be explained away as the building settling, vibrations from passing traffic, or indeed other guests in the Hotel, we didn't personally experience anything we could deem as ghostly or paranormal.

History of The Russell Hotel
1960 George Street Sydney - City of Sydney Archives

The site of the Russell Hotel has been things since The Rocks suburb was first settled when colonial Europeans first founded and settled Sydney.

In 1790 the site was used as a hospital " A Moveable Hospital for his Majesty's Distant Possession" founded in July of that year, which stood there until 1816 when a "Rum hospital" was erected in its place.

During the time the location was a hospital (and at least once whilst it was a Hotel) the area saw cases of bubonic plague, Smallpox outbreaks, crippling poverty which often saw newborn babies left in the street, dead or alive (http://thedirton.therocks.com/ ) - and a scarlet fever epidemic that saw the local government install better sewerage to help combat disease

Between the years of 1820 and 1835, Mr Samuel Terry built on the site of the former hospital, a number of shops and houses, the local council described the property as a house and shop built of stone with a shingled roof, 7 rooms across two floors and a kitchen in the rear.

In 1853, the site again changed usage and became known as the " The Patent Slip Inn" (for those wondering why the name was chosen, a "Patent Slip" is a type of dry dock where a ship can be pulled from the water on rails and repaired or cleaned) with one Robert Whitemore the licensee until 1858 when Mr John Gallagher took over, he in turn had the license until 1870

in 1887 the Patent Slip Inn was demolished to make way for Thomas Brennan's new hotel "The Port Jackson Hotel", a three story Hotel with 8 rooms made of brick and stone, with an annual income of $450 pounds.
A police officer was assaulted outside the Port Jackson Hotel, who would later die in hospital his name was Senior Constable Henry Murrow. Henry was assaulted by
Daniel Conway who would go to prison and serve six months for manslaughter in Darlinghurst Gaol.

Daniel Conway, photographed in 1897 at Darlinghurst Gaol for the
manslaughter of Constable Henry Murrow . (NSW State Records NRS 2138, photo 7218)

In 1900 the property changed hands again, bought by "Tooth & Co" with W Russell listed as the licensee. The new owners also purchased the properties behind the George street location, on Globe street and extended their hotel over 10 years from 1910 to 1920, refurbishing and remodeling all the properties as they did so.
The Russell Hotel lost some of its charisma over the years, and soon it was to become a boarding house.
In 1981 restorations work began on the Hotel, which not only covers the corner of George and Globe streets but also includes the 2nd and 3rd stories above "Rockhound" (street number 141), "The Sheepskin Shop" (street number 139) the "Fortune of War Hotel"
The Russell Hotel is now a Boutique Hotel offering a range of different priced accommodation with a continental breakfast. It sits on the very popular George Street very close to Circular Quay, The Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Russell Hotel also features a wine bar on the first floor

Haunted?

Whilst we didn't experience anything we can report ourselves, that does not mean the Hotel isn't haunted. The Russell Hotel has long been listed on the top ten lists of Haunted Hotels around the world, usually coming in around 8th or 10th place. Room 8 is considered to be the "Most haunted" room in the building due to a number of guests over the years seeing an apparition of what looks to be an old sailor standing at the end of their bed staring at them.
We spoke to the cleaners briefly upon our arrival and they told us stories of cold spots, doors opening and closing, footsteps in hallways when no-one was present, and feelings of being watched.
Some say that some of the girls from when the Hotel was used as a Brothel, many years ago, still walk the halls as well.
We also have found at least one reference to a death in more recent times, could this staff member still be walking the halls of the Russell Hotel seeking vengeance, or perhaps peace, from a crime in the 1950's?

Eidolon Investigation - Squatters Arms - SA - (2012)

<a href="http://pandora.nla.gov.au">Search Pandora</a>

Foresters & Squatters Arms
Location: Thebarton, South Australia
Location type: Pub
Location status: Public during business hours
Website: http://forrestersandsquattersarms.com.au/

History
The Foresters and Squatters arms was established in 1850 by Patrick McCarron. The land was originally owned by Thomas Toole who had purchased it in 1839. Mr McCarron leased the newly established Hotel to the publican of the Black Forest Inn, Mr. Charles Olarenshaw, which also included a Blacksmiths shop on the half acre block.
The name "Foresters And Squatters Arms" was apparently adopted because the patronage of the Hotel was mainly men from the nearby slaughter yards, farmers, farm workers and tree-loppers.

The hotel has been owned by many people in its long history, and leased to many others, here are just a few of the names we have found in our research so far:
Patrick McCarron,(original builder) Foresters and Squatters' Arms, - 1853

C.Hepworth, Foresters' and Squatters' Arms, - 1869 1870

E Johns, Foresters and Squatters' Arms, - 1873

Roper. Margaret, Foresters'' and Squatters' Arms - 1875

W. Rusbridge, Foresters' and Squatters' Arms, - 1876

William Charles Pepper, Foresters' and Squatters' Arms, - 1879

C. Vincent, Foresters' and Squatters' Arms 1890

C.J. Condon, Foresters' and Squatters' Arms, 1892 1893

Mary A. Jahn, Foresters and Squatters' Arms, 1895

Thomas Bott, Foresters' and Squatters' 1896

Mary Coveney, Foresters and Squatters' Arms 1899

W. Supple, Foresters and Squatters Arms 1906

Charles K. Hare, Foresters' and Squatters' Arms 1910

J.Ough, Foresters and Squatters' Arms bought: unknown - sold 1927

Walter Smith and William Browne Foresters and Squatters' Arms 1927

Ivan Llewellyn Roche Davey, Foresters and Squatters' Arms 1935

Gertrude Viola Thompson, Foresters and Squatters' Arms 1938

Gertrude Viola Thompson
Whilst conducting our research on the Squatters we came across a former publican named Gertrude "Gertie" Thompson whom, it would seem, lived an extraordinary life for a lady of her day.
The first newspaper article below, from The Advertiser, is a brief story about "Gertie" being accused of selling alcohol on a Sunday, which was strictly prohibited at the time - further research has indicated that the case was later dropped due to circumstantial evidence

Thursday 10 February 1938
Hotel keeper On Supply Charge
The case in which Gertrude Viola Thompson, licensee of the Foresters and Squatters Arms Hotel. Thebarton. was charged with having unlawfully sold liquor on Sunday, January 9. was continued before Mr. Morgan, 'S.M., in the Adelaide Police Court yesterday. Evidence for the defence was being given when the hearing was adjourned until February 16. Constable S. R. Stewart prosecuted, and Mr. C. T. Gun appeared for the defendant

"Gertie" was also, at one point a publican in Port Adelaide at The Royal Arms Hotel, where she was accused, and convicted of under paying a staff member named Anne Gunning.
In January 1928, Gertrude and 14 other people were arrested in a hotel in Darlinghurst (N.S.W.), and were arrested for "being found in a house frequented by reputed thieves". The ensuing court case was a very colourful one, attracting the friends and families of the accused, who jeered the prosecution at every avenue. The prosecution argued that the Chief of C.I.B. had entered the facility and was desperately outnumbered, a melee had erupted, but the Officer had fought valiantly and over come his foes, the Defence, on the other hand had a different perspective, arguing:
" a quiet party, a few drinks, some singing...(was) violently interrupted by a squad of hostile, brawling police" (Truth, 29 Jan 1928)

A story in the Sydney Morning Herald about Gertrude's arrest

The Sydney Morning Herald - Wednesday 25 January 1928

FIFTEEN PEOPLE CHARGED.
Following a police raid on a house in Riley Street early on the morning of January 15, ten men and five women appeared at the Central Police Court yesterday.
Joseph Bezzina, aged 26 years, a fireman, was charged with being the keeper of a house at 74 Riley Street, frequented by reputed thieves.
William Stone, aged 28 years, William Williamson, aged 36 years, Francis Wilson, aged 28 years, Thomas Craig, aged 26 years, Christopher Smith, aged 40 years, William Thompson, aged 27 years, Albert Fentrill, aged 27 years, George Hodder, aged 18 years, Raymond Neil, aged 27 years, Vera Simmons, aged 21 years, Gertrude Thompson, aged 40 years. Florence Norman, aged 19 years, and two other women were each charged with having been found in a house frequented by reputed thieves, and in company with reputed thieves.
Sergeant Bourke said the police went to the house, and a fight ensued. All the defendants were partly under the influence of liquor. When Bezzina was told he was to be arrested he replied, according to witness: "Oh, well, my bad luck. I pay 16/ per week rent, and I must get my money back somehow."
Constable Delaney said he had visited the house in November last, and told Bezzina it was alleged that stolen property was brought there. Bezzina denied the charge.
Inspector Mackay, Chief of the CIB, who was in charge of Darlinghurst division at the time of the raid, which he conducted, also gave evidence of the fight which had taken place. He himself had been assaulted.
The hearing was adjourned.
Charges of assaulting the police in the execution of their duty were laid against Stone, Williamson, Wilson, Craig, Smith, and Thompson. Stone was further charged with having in his possession an unlicensed revolver.

Many people have passed through the Squatters doors over the years,
but some have not made it out alive!

The South Australian Advertiser

Monday 5 November 1860

FATAL ACCIDENT. - On Saturday evening,
between the hours of 5 and 6, an accident occurred to a man named Richard Leonard, which terminated fatally. It appears that the unfortunate man was in the employ of Mr. Primrose, brewer, and was proceeding from Bowden to Thebarton, when, about 200 yards from the Squatters' Arms, Thebarton, the horse became restless, and jolted the dray ; he was in the act of giving the reins to, his nephew, a little boy who was with him, when the wheel lurched-in consequence of a hole in the road-and threw the boy from the cart, who, in falling dropped the reins, which fell under the horse's feet ; the deceased then attempted to snap the reins, but failed to do so, and fell under the wheel, which passed over his loins and smashed his ribs. A person driving a dray behind him, picked him up, put him into it, and conveyed him to the Squatters* Arms, when Mr. Jacques, the landlord, immediately sent for two medical gentle- men ; but before Dr. Lane arrived the unfortunate man expired, which was about 15 minutes after the wheel passed over him. An inquest was held on Sunday morning, when the Jury returned a verdict of accidental death. The deceased was an old colonist, and has been a long time in the employ of Mr. Primrose. He has left a wife and four children to deplore his untimely end.

This next newspaper story is a little bit vague about where exactly this child got the acid from, in the era this was written, a Hotel was often refereed to as a "House"

South Australian Register

Thursday 27 March 1884

DEATH FROM MURIATIC ACID.
On Wednesday the City Coroner (Mr. T. Ward) held an inquest at the Squatters' Arms, Thebarton, on the body of a child named Thomas Alfred Beesley, who had died the previous day from the effects of muriatic acid. The evidence showed that a bottle containing the muriatic acid had been left in a firepot within reach of the child, who drank some on coming into the house, and seemed to be choking and in great pain. His mother went into the yard and found that the bottle had been taken out of the firepot. She poured some water into his mouth and sent for Dr. Rees, who attended and found the child showing all the symptoms of asphyxia, and administered the usual remedies, but the child died on Tuesday evening. The Jury brought in a verdict that the cause of death was asphyxia from accidentally swallowing a quantity of muriatic acid or spirits of salts.

After a quick meet and greet with Dick Dale and some of the locals, we set up our DVR system to monitor the area - Dick then set about giving us a tour of the Squatters. we visited every room and even the basement!
We then set about taking some EMF readings in various areas, and recording some EVP sessions - which proved to be difficult with the vast volumes of traffic passing by this close to the city.
We noted that the Office area upstairs was significantly cooler than every other room in the building, plus had lower baseline EMF readings.
we also had large fluctuations of EMF in the front bar - please note, as the hotel was closed for the day, there was no electricity running under the bar to the post-mix machine or other powered devices.

We intend on returning to the Squatters Arms in the very near future for a full over-night investigation to ascertain if the building truly is haunted, or if there is some other factors at play. In the meantime, we will continue our research into
The Forresters and Squatters Arms, to find the truth behind rumours of deaths that plague the building.

We are particularly interested to know more about the story of a fire that occurred in the building that is claimed to have taken upwards of 30 lives, if you know more about this tragedy please do not hesitate to contact us at one of the email address's below
