Tuesday 6 October 1936
A visitor to Kapunda for the Centenary celebrations was the Archbishop
of Adelaide (Most Rev. Dr. Killian). who attended the street carnival on
Saturday night.
Yesterday
he celebrated first mass at St. Rose's Church, and afterwards
administered the sacrament of confirmation to 75 candidates. In the
afternoon a procession of motor cars was formed at St. Rose's, and
traveled to St. John's Cemetery, where Dr. Killian unveiled a monument
to the first parish priest in Kapunda, the Rev. John Fallon, who was in
charge in 1849.
The
pilgrimage also visited the grave of the first Vicar-General of the
Archdiocese, the Rev. Michael Ryan. Six priests are buried in St. John's
Cemetery, and all the graves were visited. Among the 'visitors was Mrs.
Meggins, aged 93, who was a parishioner in Father Fallon's time.
The
Archbishop and Father Maloney, the present priest, addressed the
assemblage. Special services were held at the other churches, at which
there were large congregations. Including many old time residents. Among
the visiting clergy were the Revs. C. P. Hall (Glen Osmond), P. C.
Eckersley (Wesley College), and A. E. Bell (chairman of the
Congregational Union).
In the afternoon a combined national thanksgiving service was held in
the Soldiers' Memorial Hall, the arrangements for which were in the
charge of the Rev. A. E. Kain (Anglican). An address was given by the
Rev. Mr. Hall, a former minister of Christ Church, who spent part of his
childhood in the Kapunda district.
Others
who assisted in the service were the Rev. G. H. Cleaveley
(Congregational), S. Bowering (Baptist) Adjutant Peek (Salvation Army). A
combined choir under the baton of Mr. George Anderson, led the singing,
and the Kapunda Brass Band supplied the accompaniment.
This morning about 150 people attended the primary school for the back
to school celebrations. Several foundation scholars attended, and a
number were in school attire.
Mr. J. Langdon, the Mayor of Thebarton, acted as teacher, and during
the recess flew a kite promised him by Mr. J. H. Sampson 55 years ago,
and just handed over. The classrooms were crowded, and the old scholars
sang lustily part-songs of 50 years ago.
The
visitors were welcomed by the Mayor (Mr C H. Branson), who also recited
"The Old Grey Hen." Addresses were given by Messrs. W. J. C. Cole, Fred
Bennett, T. S. Davie (one of the first teachers), and W. T. Truscott.
The "Song of Australia" concluded the proceedings.
In the afternoon a school demonstration was held at Dutton Park.
The Kapunda school and all the district schools joined forces in
marches, drills, maypole and other dances, all combining to form the
word Kapunda on the oval. This evening the Kapunda and District Old
Scholars' Association gave a repeat performance of "Snapshot Follies of
1936" in the Memorial Hall, which was crowded. The takings at the
barriers for the street carnival on Saturday night amounted to more than
£60. The picnic race meeting, which was to be held on Wednesday, has
been abandoned owing to insufficient entries.

Thanks for posting this Allen. I found the extract from The Advertiser 1936 very interesting as it mentioned my great grandfather Rev Samuel Wheatley Bowering.
ReplyDeleteI just returned from a visit to Kapunda, the museum there was amazing, full of history and well worth a look.
