Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present: Nelly Barr

Nelly Barr
W.A.P.E.

Hailing from Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, today we introduce Nelly Barr of West Australian Paranormal Enthusiasts or WAPE for short.
Western Australia has a growing scene of paranormal investigation as we have seen through previous interviews in this series with other Western Australian teams.
Taken at Swanbourne Mental Asylum by Mandi
this photo has baffled the team for
sometime.

Nelly tells me she has always had an interest in the paranormal, and unlike many of the people I have interviewed, doesn’t have a story of a spirit manifesting that prompted her to follow a path of paranormal investigation, instead, Nelly tells me, it was always an interest in her life, for as long as she can remember.
Nelly also tells me of seeing 5 cent pieces anywhere and everywhere, which she believes is a sign from above.
I have often been told that finding random coins (usually gold) in odd places and at random times is a sign of Angel's connecting with you. Nelly also as times hears voices and is at time's empathic, feeling emotions in certain locations.

This was taken at Fairbridge also, and that's my friend who could feel someone above her the whole time we were all in that building, the Bunbury Psychic said someone had hung themselves in that building and my friend felt it and in the pitch black called out to me to take the photo, and that's what I got.

Nelly officially declared her interested in 2011 becoming an investigator but has always visited spooky locations searching for answers of the unknown.

WAPE consists of three team members who are on an equal basis, with no-one an individual team leader. Andy, who is the team sceptic, likes to keep the other two members, Mandi & Nelly grounded.
The team have visited some fantastic locations, but Nelly lists Azelia Ley Homestead as her favourite location to investigate as there the team encountered shadow people, and Nelly had her hair pulled by an entity!
Taken by Mandi at
Maddington farmhouse
. Can you see the
little boys face?
Other locations the team were impressed with, include Fairbridge in Pinjarra, a sad feeling location, Fremantle Power Station, a place Nelly says feels awful, and a place she won't go back too, even in daylight and Greenough, a location that Nelly says “ has an awful vibe about it too, even driving through the town gives me the creeps and I feel unwell and have been overcome by negative emotions, its strange.”

Nelly went on to tell me a little about an investigation at Greenough:
“I was walking through Greenough Cemetery with my friend who suddenly jumped and said "You little bugger" I, of course, was like “what?”, She said "The little bugger pushed me off his grave" and sure enough when we read the stone it was a boy of about 8 years old”

WAPE often use their Spirit Box on investigations, and are often told to “Get out!” or “Run!”, which of course pushed one's adrenaline into overdrive, Nelly and the team also love when they get a name that they can then go and research and find facts on, which gives them a buzz and sense of satisfaction when they find the history matches what they are told.

WAPE has a collection of photos in their “photo vault” that of apparitions they have caught on camera, but Nelly says the scariest one they have was a daylight photo taken by Mandi whilst on holiday in Bendigo.
Although WAPE doesn't run any tours, they often invite people from their facebook group out on trips with them and have also held sleep overnights in Fairbridge. Plans are also in the works for Fremantle Gaol and a sleepover at Woodmans Point Quarantine Station
This is a team not searching for any limelights, just enjoying what they are enthusiastic about, they haven’t done any media, as they are not looking to be famous, they are just looking to be who they are, and enjoy what they do, which is very refreshing in this community where so many are trying to famous for the sake of being famous, without actually investigating the afterlife..

I took this at Fairbridge Village which is an old orphanage for children from the UK from the early 1900s I can see a little curly-haired boy with his arm up to his face in the window pane directly right of the flash, he is as plain as day to me but not to everyone. Matrixing?? not sure but his appearance did fit with what the well known Bunbury Psychic was seeing and feeling at the time. - Nelly

Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present: Friedrich Jurgenson

The Godfather of EVP

Friedrich Jurgenson

Born in 1903 in Odesa, a city in Ukraine, Friedrich Jurgenson was the son of a Swedish mother and Danish father, who had moved to the country from Estonia.
The family pushed young Friedrich into the arts. He trained as a painter and concerto pianist. During World One the family fled from Estonia.
In 1925 the family moved back to Estonia, Jurgenson went as well, and soon left for Berlin to continue studying, only to find his tutor was a Jew, who decided to flee the Nazi's to Palestine, Friedrich went as well and stayed there for 6 years, where he also started a successful Opera career.
Jurgenson ventured home to visit his parents in Estonia, the bitterly cold weather damaged his vocal cords and ended his singing career. He decided to then focus entirely on his painting, of which he had become very accomplished.

During World War 2, he moved to Sweden and learnt his tenth language. He also married and became a citizen. He spent his time painting portraits of wealthy Swedes.
Whilst visiting Italy, Jurgenson was asked by the Vatican to catalogue their archaeological works, buried beneath the Holy City. Jurgenson did as he was asked, and impressed Pope Pius XII so much with his work that the Pope asked him to paint a portrait of him, of which he did, then completed three more, for a total of four portraits of the Pope.

In 1957, Jurgenson purchased a tape recorder to record himself singing. He noticed in places, during playback, that the sound faded in and out. He also began to take notice of his sixth sense abilities, abstract visions, and telepathic messages.
He had this to say about what he was hearing.

"I sat by the table, clearly awake and relaxed. I sensed that soon something was going to happen. Following an inner pleasurable calmness, long sentences in English appeared in my consciousness. I did not perceive these sentences acoustically but they formed themselves as long phonetic sentences and after a closer study I couldn't conceive the words as correct English but in a disfigured almost alphabetical way - completely deformed. I did not hear a voice, a sound nor a whisper. It was all soundless."

In 1959, FJurgenson made a discovery that would change the paranormal community. Whilst visiting his country house with his wife Monica, Jurgenson decided to take his tape recorder and get some of the local bird sounds caught on tape, whilst listening back he discovered that he could hear a man's voice.
Jurgenson said this of his recording:

" I heard a noise, vibrating like a storm, where you could only remotely hear the chirping of the birds. My first thought was that maybe some of the tubes had been damaged. In spite of this, I switched on the machine again and let the tape roll. Again I heard this peculiar noise and the distant chirping. Then I heard a trumpet solo, a kind of a signal for attention. Stunned, I continued to listen when suddenly a man's voice began to speak in Norwegian. Even though the voice was quite low I could clearly hear and understand the words. The man spoke about 'nightly bird voices' and I perceived a row of piping, splashing and rattling sounds. Suddenly the choir of birds and the vibrating noise stopped. In the next moment, the chirping of a chaffinch was heard and you could hear the tits singing at a distance - the machine worked perfectly!"

Friedrich Jurgenson went on to research and document thousands of voices he recorded, all, he claimed, “spirits from the other side”, or “voices of the dead”
One single event cemented his belief that he was indeed recording the voices of people that had passed over, and that was the sound of his dead Mothers voice.

"I was outside with a tape recorder, recording bird songs. When I listen through the tape, a voice was heard to say "Friedel, can you hear me. It's mammy ...." It was my dead mother's voice. 'Friedel' was her special nickname for me."

Jurgenson abandoned his painting and other interest, and began to concentrate solely on his EVP work, even publishing a book in 1964 titled "The Voices From Space”

Jurgenson now found himself in an interesting place, paranormal societies from across the world, The University of Freiburg and the Para-psychological Association of the USA all wanted to talk to him, also, Claude Thorlin and Konstantin Raudive came to visit and learn what they could of Jurgenson’s techniques and findings.

In 1960, one of the spirit voices told him to use radio as a medium to listen and interact with spirits, this he did, and continued to do until his death. He plugged the radio directly into his recording device and set the frequency to around 1145-1500 kHz (1485.0 kHz is now called the Jürgenson Frequency), Friedrich found he could communicate in real-time with the spirits and hold
conversations.

Jurgenson went to on author more books, and also to paint another Pope, and also make a documentary about him, which earned him the Order of Commendatore Gregorio Magno from the hand of Pope Paul VI.

By the 1980's
Jurgenson had become very well known in Parapsychology and paranormal investigation circles for his Electronic Voice Phenomena recordings, studies, lectures and books. By 1985 he was predicting that television would soon be able to carry “spirit” pictures with voices also, he called his new vision “Audioscopic Work”, unfortunately, he died before he achieved this dream.

Friedrich Jurgenson died in 1987,  the Godfather of electronic voice phenomena did not merely pass away quietly though. Since his death he has returned through EVP sessions, constantly telling how “life” is in the afterlife, his image has even appeared on television sets in different parts of the world at the same time, in similar conditions as to what he had predicted.

Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present: HAPP Croatia

HAPP Croatia

This week we travel to the city of Split, a Mediterranean city on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, centred around the ancient Roman Palace of Emperor Diocletian in Croatia to meet Emily of HAPP Croatia, but in a first for our blog, we have not been given permission to use a photo of Emily, who would prefer to keep her anonymity for now, which I think would be a first in the ego-based paranormal community!

I asked Emily how she became interested in the paranormal?

"When I was a kid, about 4 years old, I had a strange feeling that I don’t belong here and my real parents are somewhere up so I used to watch the sky every night and cry for them. In that time I started to receive messages from my invisible friend who taught me how to use mental abilities to predict danger, "read" people and things which can help me in the future. I also had dreams about abductions by military people and many years after I realised that weren’t dreams."

Have you had anything paranormal occur in your life? (if so, what has happened)

"Yes. The most paranormal thing that happened to me were abductions. I can remember many of that, places, people, aliens and I have 2 visible and touchable implants in my skin. It all started when I was so little. After I started to talk about abductions, people in black suits were monitoring me, running after me and tried to hit me with a car.
There are many ghost stories happened in my room, after I woke up in the morning I noticed white wax on my wall. That was strange. After my neighbour passed away, I didn’t know that, but I saw him, walking near me, and he was dead for 3 days then. He looked strange to me. He wore a black suit and his eyes were black."
"Also, electronics become crazy near me sometimes. Once when I was going back home from school, 3 cars on the parking lot started to work when I walked near them. After I went they turned off."

Why did you become an investigator/ researcher?
"Because I want to find that place where they took me after the abduction and many other people. Some of them die there in a lot of pain and the most of them are homeless. I want to help them. I know how that place looks like."

How has becoming an investigator changed your life?
"When you "hit the right spot" it is very dangerous to be an investigator. There is much big stuff in the paranormal world that no many people know."

I asked Emily, who is the founder of HAPP about her team and if she had previously worked in other teams
"I prefer solo work, but I need a team so I have a friend who I works with, but we cooperate with many other investigators."

I asked Emily to share three locations she was most impressed with, but only one location impressed her enough to get a mention!

"Bed room of one girl. We recorded noise while she was sleeping. It was horror what we hear after on the tape. We don’t go on the field for now. All we need is the experience of abductees and by that, we mean on the places they can remember."

Do you have any interesting stories related to an investigation that you can share Emily?
"A woman contacted with a problem with ghosts. Electronics explode, TV turns on and off by itself, her baby follow something invisible, things move and fall on the ground. She put a camera to record her son while he was sleeping and the camera was moving. Scary. We were talk with her and after a while, we found out that someone from her family died in that house and not so long ago. After she realized that, all stopped."

Has anything unexplainable or paranormal ever happened on an investigation that you wish to share?
"We were investigate an old part of a hospital. It was under ground, wet, dark and spooky. In one moment we could feel something is there. We weren’t alone anymore. There was an old broken metal telephone without wires and anything, but it started to ring just like a radio in Silent Hill game. We run away and never came back haha :)"

What is your best piece of evidence you have captured, and can you tell me about why you consider it good evidence?
"The best piece of evidence is an implants I have in my skin. I can`t remember how the first one came, but I remember the other one. After I had a "dream" about an underground hospital, operation room and military persons, I woke up in the middle of the night with a little bloody wound and a metal thing in it. I can write you everything I can remember from an abductions. They always took me in the same place."

What is your favourite piece of equipment, and why?
"mp3 player and my computer. the mp3 player helps me to record noises when someone sleep and computer helps me to get all the information I need for my work."

Paranormal Investigators: Past & Present: Charles Fort

Fortean Times: Charles Fort

A native of Albany New York USA, Charles Fort will forever be remembered for his books on unusual events, sciences and paranormal, which inspired the word “Fortean” used to describe “paranormal phenomena” and for the inspiration of the magazine “Fortean Times”, which reports on strange and unusual occurrences in our world, a magazine that has been running for 40 years.

As a young man, Charles was a naturalist, enjoying pastimes like bird watching and mineral collecting, he was considered intelligent and curious but did not excel in school.
He was an avid reader, taking in as much knowledge of the world as he could.

When Charles was 18 he left New York to gain some worldly experience, and travelled throughout the USA, Scotland, England and South Africa, but fell ill in South Africa and had to return home. He was nursed by a lady who would become his future wife, Anna Filing.
The Forts weren't terribly well off, and Charles writing career did not bring in great amounts of money, but somehow the two found themselves in England, where they lived for two years, whilst Charles researched for his upcoming book.
Charles and Anna were handed a lucky break in 1916, through the unfortunate loss of his brother Clarence. Charles and his other brother Raymond, both inherited a small amount of money, enough for Charles to give up his day job and focus entirely on his writing, of which he loved so much.
Charles had written a number of novels over the years, and successfully published one in 1909, but he had little to no success with its sales, now getting other manuscripts published, this was about to change though.
In 1919, a book Charles had been working on, titled “ The Book of the Damned” had made it to the printing press, through the help of a close friend, Mr Dreiser.
The book was a collection of data and narratives about phenomena that science could not categorise, rejected or ignored. It was through his extensive work as a journalist and his wit, as well as contrary nature, that Charles wrote the narrative in his book, that would later extend into other writings. His style was unpretentious and at odds with the media of the day, who tended to over rationalise scientific studies and results.
Charles Fort's books almost always received positive reviews and went on to reprints, and even a special edition omnibus in 1941.
Charles work earned him a great many followers amongst the public, who lapped up all his unusual, weird and odd stories, he received a cult-like status in his lifetime, and would later influence people to form Fortean societies and investigation teams.

Charles collapsed on May 3rd 1932, he had been suffering from ill health for some time, he was rushed to the Royal Hospital in The Bronx, and would later pass away from symptoms associated with Leukaemia
Charles Fort was buried in the Fort family plot in Albany New York, his legacy of 6000 plus notes on unusual sciences and events was donated to the New York Public Library

The Haunting of the Cornwall Hotel – Boulder - Western Australia

The Cornwall Hotel – Boulder

Built in 1898 in the town of Boulder (which in 1989 became the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.) The Cornwall Hotel has a long and dark history, with links to riots, police murders and prostitution.

1926 saw the murder of Detective-sergeant Alexander Pitman and Inspector John Walsh. The two officers had recently caught out the owner and bartender, the two men, and another man, had been found with gold ore on their possession stolen from a local mine, of which the men were then smelting themselves and selling, it is through this was the motive behind the killing of the officers.
Although the killings, of which were gruesome, did not occur at the Hotel, it is still sometimes thought that the officers are haunting there as a reminder to the three men – the two officers were found in a local mine shaft just outside town, brutally and savagely murdered and dismembered.

Treffene and Coulter were duly hung for their crimes in Fremantle Gaol, Clarke, who turned in his friends (and did not take part in the murders), spent a little time in Gaol, he was pardoned for his part in the crime and received a reward for information.
Northern Star (Lismore, NSW  1876 - 1954),
 Thursday 1 July 1926, page 5
In 1934 the hotel was extensively damaged during local race riots, unemployment was coming down hard on the workers of the goldfields, who were finding it hard to make ends meet, their anger was aimed towards the harder working Italian and Slavic community that had sprung up around the mines.
The townsfolk took over the local trams, and went to Boulder, where they began attacking anyone of “foreign” appearance, the unruly mob began to set fires in any buildings that foreigners used, including the Cornwall hotel – after three days the riots simmered down, but the damage was done

1934 after riot damage
The hotel was repaired and opened again until 1976 when it closed down entirely, only to reopen in 1987 and be fully restored to its former glory.

The hotel has long been rumoured to be haunted, with multiple deaths, some natural some murder, happening in-between its walls.....
